The Kitchen to Premiere New Tina Satter WorkThe Kitchen to Premiere New Tina Satter Work
by BWW News Desk - Nov 25, 2014

Award-winning writer and director Tina Satter, along with her company Half Straddle, re-imagine and re-invigorate cult pop and literary tropes in an effort to trouble and question language and identity. As company member Jess Barbagallo has written, 'Characters in Tina's plays are often on the precipice of a subversive self-discovery, and articulate a sad but liberating and intrinsically queer value: that the self is perhaps never to be discovered, but always to be made.' In Satter's meticulous landscapes, both actors and characters playfully embrace fluidity, feminine agency and subversion. Critics have marveled at Satter's theatricality. Ben Brantley in The New York Times called her work, 'enchanting,' and, 'so very refreshing' while Helen Shaw in Time Out New York declared, 'Satter's Half Straddle company is launching a particularly coordinated goal-line drive to a new feminist form.' BWW Reviews: Mikhail Baryshnikov Ignites MAN IN A CASE at The Broad StageBWW Reviews: Mikhail Baryshnikov Ignites MAN IN A CASE at The Broad Stage
by Shari Barrett - May 1, 2014

Adapted from two Anton Chekhov short stories, Man in a Case and About Love, MAN IN A CASE is a pair of haunting love stories - one of an officious, anti-social man and his involvement with an extroverted woman. The second, a tale of moral ambiguity in which the protagonist forgoes his love for a married woman. Though seemingly different, both are tales of fear trumping the pursuit of life's most promising possibilities, with Baryshnikov playing the two very different leading men. (more...)

BWW Review: Baryshnikov Has All the Right MovesBWW Review: Baryshnikov Has All the Right Moves
by Nancy Grossman - Feb 27, 2014

Fusing theater, dance, music, and video, ArtsEmerson's MAN IN A CASE is an unusual entertainment, something that has to be seen to be appreciated. At the least, it is an example of thinking outside of the box and an opportunity to see one of the world's greatest dancers onstage; at best, it is an opportunity to see that one of the world's greatest dancers has many more tricks up his tights and that his fluid movements have not abandoned him. You can take the dancer out of the ballet, but you cannot take the ballet out of the dancer. Even in a straight play, the man still has all the right moves. (more...)
