If you are even a semi-regular reader of this column of reviews, you know that about every three or four months, I post a compilation of observations of shows from the previous quarter of the year. This cabaret critiquing mash up happens for a number of reasons, not the least of which is that I admittedly see too many cabaret shows for the amount of time I have to promptly review them (and then, of course, the usual writer's procrastination sets in). So I have to prioritize the timeliness of the reviews based on the prestige of the performer, the length of a show run, the strength (or lack thereof) of the performance, etc. The quality of the shows in these compilations—which can range from a half dozen to a dozen reviews in one shot—are usually a mixed bag of outright raves, qualified positives, and constructive pans (I'm not a fan of the word “negative” in the reviewer lexicon). With that in mind here are a collection of cabaret show reviews going back to the start of a very harsh winter.

Ten years ago, as a reaction to over-amplification of musicals, Scott Siegel had the crazy idea that there might be an audience for a concert of Broadway show tunes performed the way they used to be sung: without microphones. And Scott had the perfect place to try out his theory, the acoustically wonderful Town Hall on West 43rd St. With no money, but the support of a great many singers who wanted, literally, to be heard in a way that was no longer possible on Broadway, he launched the first Broadway Unplugged, boasting 'Sound Design by God.' Throughline Artists announced today the cast for SUMMER SHORTS 2013, their seventh annual festival of new American short plays from established and emerging writers, at 59E59 Theaters (59 East 59th Street between Park and Madison Avenues).

The Shakespeare Theatre of New Jersey and Two River Theater announce a unique partnership celebrating two of Noel Coward's delightful comedies being presented this spring at their respective theatres. With the two companies collaborating and promoting each other's productions, patrons can purchase discount tickets to see both comedies by contacting the box office at either theater. For the low price of $75 for Sunday,Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday evenings or Saturday matinees, patrons will receive a ticket to see Present Laughter at Two River Theater in Red Bank andFallen Angels at The Shakespeare Theatre of New Jersey in Madison. For the discounted price of $90, patrons may attend a Friday or Saturday evening orSunday matinee of both shows.

In New York City in 2004, a fun and raunchy little Broadway musical called Avenue Q escalated to stardom across the entertainment industry, nabbing the Tony Award for Best Musical. Leading the way was Best Actor nominee, John Tartaglia, who then went on to grace NY stages in Beauty and the Beast and Shrek: The Musical. Now, fans and audiences of the multi-talented comedian can anticipate his breakthrough performance into the world of feature films as John plays 'Dale,' the quirky manager of an offbeat retirement home in the upcoming Silent But Deadly. The comedy/horror will be screening as an Official Selection of the 8th annual Hoboken International Film Festival at the Paramount Theatre in Middletown, NY this evening, June 5, 2013.
