The University of California, Berkeley Art Museum and Pacific Film Archive (BAMPFA) will launch the region-wide celebration of the 50th anniversary of the Summer of Love with HIPPIE MODERNISM: THE STRUGGLE FOR UTOPIA. This major exhibition examines the intersection of the radical art, architecture, and design of the counterculture of the 1960s and early 1970s and the resonance of these innovations today. A traveling exhibition organized by the Walker Art Center and assembled with the assistance of BAMPFA, Hippie Modernism will be on view in Berkeley from February 8 through May 21, 2017. The exhibition will coincide with the first anniversary of BAMPFA's new Diller Scofidio + Renfro-designed building in downtown Berkeley. (more...)

The University of California, Berkeley Art Museum and Pacific Film Archive (BAM/PFA) will host a free day-long celebration on December 21, 2014 to commemorate its last day of programming in its current building at 2626 Bancroft Way. Let's Go! A Farewell Revel will feature dance battles by the brilliantTURFinc; a concert by the all-women vocal ensemble Kitka; a performance by groundbreaking artist Dohee Lee; sound art by Chris Kallmyer; art-making for kids of all ages with Veronica Graham; and a performance of György Ligeti's 1962 compositionPoème symphonique for one hundred metronomes, led by pianist/composer Sarah Cahill. The event will culminate in a celebratory procession across the UC Berkeley campus to the site of BAM/PFA's future home, which is under construction at 2155 Center St., on the corner of Oxford and Center Streets in downtown Berkeley. The Cleveland Orchestra and the Cleveland Museum of Art collaborate in the presentation of California Masterworks, two intimate Cleveland Orchestra concerts at the museum featuring works by groundbreaking composers inextricably associated with California. James Feddeck, Cleveland Orchestra assistant conductor, will conduct performances Wednesday, May 1 and Friday, May 3 in the museum's Gartner Auditorium. The programs include works by John Adams, Henry Cowell, Lou Harrison, Terry Riley, James Tenney, and, in a posthumous world premiere, Dane Rudhyar.
