Sophie Auster Sets NYC Tour DatesSophie Auster Sets NYC Tour Dates
by BWW News Desk - Jun 1, 2016

“If Tom Waits and Billie Holiday were to have a style child, singer-songwriter Sophie Auster would be it,” writes Vogue, describing the unique blend of power and glamour that Auster commands. The Deli likens her music to “a cross between Fiona Apple's righteous rage andGillian Welch's homespun folk yarns…” While Auster cites these artists as influences for her songwriting, her music is wholly her own. Her latest album, Dogs and Men (Out Loud Music), has been called “soaring” (W Magazine). The New York Times praises the album's “songs that meld sultry, folksy vocals with soul- (and teeth-) baring lyrics” and recently premiered the video for the album's first single, “Bad Manners.” Her NYC tour itinerary can be found below. BWW Review: JOEY ARIAS (with Ben Allison) Brings His LITTLE BLACK BOOK and Downtown Sensibilities To PangeaBWW Review: JOEY ARIAS (with Ben Allison) Brings His LITTLE BLACK BOOK and Downtown Sensibilities To Pangea
by Alix Cohen - Jun 1, 2016

Joey Arias, vocalist/songwriter/actor/performance artist/host, has been on the scene here since the 1980s. Visually and vocally distinctive, Arias's signature black bangs and ponytail have been on stages such as Club 57, Astor Theater, HERE, and Abrons Art Center--not to mention playing Mistress of Seduction at Cirque du Soleil's Zumanity in Las Vegas.  To say the physically diminutive Arias is larger than life is a comment on her fully inhabited, unique presence and talent. On May 30 (the third of seven show run through late July), she's aided and abetted in Little Black Book (no idea what the title means) by Musical Director (and superb bass player) Ben Allison and guitarist Brandon Seabrook. Americana Singer Valerie June Coming to SOPAC, 6/12Americana Singer Valerie June Coming to SOPAC, 6/12
by BWW News Desk - May 9, 2016

Valerie June brings her bluesy voice from Williamsburg, Brooklyn, to the South Orange Performing Arts Center June 12 at 7:30 p.m. Valerie's astonishing and singular sound is a blend of rural Roots and Country that bridges Alan Lomax's acoustic field recordings with biting, electric Indie-Blues. The singer-songwriter's voice percolates somewhere between Dolly Parton and Billie Holiday. It is a stop-you-dead-in-your-tracks kind of voice, the kind that grips your imagination and paints her Southern portraits in vivid detail. (more...)
