The Living Theatre, the oldest experimental theatre group still producing in the United States, continues its 63rd season with the world premiere of Judith Malina's KORACH - a new play based on the Biblical account of Korach, 'the first recorded anarchist in history,' who challenged the authority of Moses over the Israelites; a pivotal point in their 40-year trek through the desert after their liberation from Egyptian slavery - with previews to begin December 8, prior to its official press opening December 16 at The Living Theatre (21 Clinton Street).

Meet Joseph Stalin, Adolf Hitler, Hamlet, Ophelia, Ludwig Wittgenstein, Bertolt Brecht, talk show host Sally McNally, part of a virtual parade of 76 characters - famous, infamous and fictional - all played by a talented and spirited ensemble of five actors. This startling theatrical montage with 17 songs and rap, is the Castillo Theatre's latest foray into material by Heiner Müller, the East German playwright/poet who enraged the authorities before the Berlin wall came down, but never defected or repudiated communism. There will be a Special Marathon performance (all three acts) on Sunday, December 5th at 2:00 p.m.

Today we are talking to an Emmy-winning stage star best known for his unforgettable turns as the Wizard of Oz himself in the original Broadway cast of THE WIZ, as well as his Emmy-winning performance in both the Broadway and filmed version of AIN'T MISBEHAVIN'. In recent years, he has found much success with his choices of eccentric, oft-controversial roles, particularly those roles in the hot-button play PRYMATE and the David Yazbeck/Terrance McNally musical THE FULL MONTY. In this portion of our conversation, De Shields impresses with his effortless grace, studied theories on his craft and the art of theatre, all with taking a look forward to his newest stage venture - KNOCK ME A KISS by Charles Smith - which opens this weekend. The Threepenny Opera ran at the Arden Theatre Company from September 30-November 7. Threepenny features a book by Bertol Brecht and music by Krut Weill - you've probably heard 'Mack the Knife' as it became a popular standard for crooners. Though the show is certainly a predecessor of the musical theater genre we know today, it is more a play with a variety of musical numbers.
