Did Abraham Lincoln suffer from clinical depression? A grad student at Cal, newly in love, researches Lincoln's melancholy while trying to keep up with her amazing new girlfriend. The Marsh San Francisco presents the hilarious playwright, performer, juggler, and clown Sara Felder in her new solo show MELANCHOLY, A COMEDY. Felder takes audiences from the Civil War, to a Lincoln look-alike convention, to the top of UC Berkeley's Campanile, in this comedy about queer love, mental health, and Abraham Lincoln. Written and performed by Felder and directed by Michael Socrates Moran, workshop performances will be held May 9 - June 6, with the run continuing June 7 - June 28 (press opening: June 7). Performances will be presented Saturdays at 5pm and Sundays at 7pm at The Marsh San Francisco's Studio Theater, 1062 Valencia St., San Francisco. The acclaimed stage company, The Theater Project, will again bring script in hand performances to Union Township's Special Improvement District, presenting two short comedies from their Playwrights Workshop for NJ authors. The event will be hosted at Cioffi's Italian Ristorante on April 27 thanks to the support of the Special Improvement District, and a Union County HEART grant from the Board of Chosen Freeholders. While enjoying the performance at Cioffi's, theater-goers will also see Union's growing downtown. (more...)

Director Walter Meierjohann has announced the cast of the world premiere of The Funfair, the first HOME production in its brand new home at First Street in Manchester. An adaptation by Olivier Award-winning playwright Simon Stephens of Ödon von Horvath's classic 1932 play Kasimir and Karoline, the production features a cast of 13 actors and actor-musicians. This production runs through May 24, 2015, with Bill Simmons serving as director. Tom Horan wrote Typhoid Mary in 2013 during his first season as the Phoenix Theatre's Playwright-in-Residence. New Brooklyn Theatre has dedicated its 2015 season to the past, present, and future of African-American women playwrights. In 2014, the company staged a series of readings of historic but neglected African-American plays from the 1850s to the 1930s with the promise that audiences would help the company select one for a full production. The Center for Puppetry Arts' renovation and expansion, set to be completed in fall 2015, will include the new “Worlds of Puppetry” Museum, featuring the most comprehensive collection of Jim Henson puppets and artifacts in the world. In support of the Center's expansion, the family of Jim Henson has commissioned master printer Andrew Mockler to create three original lithographs of Henson's striking artwork: “Conceit,” “Melancholy” and “Hilarity.” (more...)
