 Lyric Theatre of Oklahoma continues its new works initiative this fall with BERNICE BOBS HER HAIR, a world premiere musical that will take its first bows at Lyric's Plaza Theatre.  The show, written by the lauded pair of Adam Gwon and Julia Jordan, will run October 7 through 25. Based on the F. Scott Fitzgerald short story of the same name, the show tells the story of 18 year old Bernice Harvey's journey from socially awkward to the belle of the country club- and back again. Strawdog Theatre Company and Artistic Director Hank Boland are proud to announce the first main stage production in its 2015 - 2016 season, Patrick Marber's After Miss Julie, has been extended through October 3, directed by Elly Green, at Strawdog Theatre Company, 3829 N. Broadway St. The performance schedule is Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays at 8 p.m. and Sundays at 4 p.m.  Single Tickets are $28 and on sale now. BERKELEY, CA (UPDATED September 1, 2015) – Music Director Joana Carneiro and Berkeley Symphony have announced programming for the 2015-2016 season, including the West Coast premiere of Laterna Magica by Kaija Saariaho, who will be a visiting music professor at UC Berkeley this fall; the West Coast premiere of Mark Grey's new Frankenstein Symphony, co-commissioned with the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra; and the U.S. premiere of Fachwerk by Russian composer Sofia Gubaidulina, featuring the Bay Area debut of Geir Draugsvoll, a pioneer of the bayan, or classical accordion, for whom the work was written. The Orchestra also welcomes soprano Simone Osborne, and violinist Simone Porter, both making their Bay Area debuts, in addition to a first-time Berkeley Symphony appearance by pianist Conrad Tao. The Kentucky Symphony Orchestra and Music Director James R. Cassidy close the Symphony's 20th anniversary Summer Series in Devou Park, Saturday, September 5 at 7:30 p.m. with a free program dubbed "The Battle of Broadway: Sondheim vs. Webber." Composers Stephen Sondheim and Andrew Lloyd Webber (who coincidently have the same birthday - March 22) ruled the boards on Broadway and the West End for most of the 1970s-80s compiling hit song after hit song in a string of award winning musicals. Home-grown bonafide Broadway stars Pamela Myers and Jessica Hendy will be featured, singing the hit tunes of these living legends. (more...)

The Oakland Symphony opens its 22nd season with a West Coast premiere by Bay Area composer Mason Bates Friday, October 2, at 8 pm at the Paramount Theatre in Oakland. The program, with Music Director and conductor Michael Morgan on the podium, includes the West Coast premiere of Bates's Devil's Radio, Prokofiev's Violin Concerto No. 2 with guest soloist and young Bay Area artist Kenneth Renshaw, selections from Brahms' Liebeslieder Waltzes with the Oakland Symphony Chorus conducted by Lynne Morrow, who celebrates her tenth year with the Chorus, and Rachmaninoff's Symphonic Dances. On Monday, August 10th, STAGES St. Louis hosted its annual one-night-only cabaret event, Cheers!, benefiting the organization's Education and Artistic Programs. This year, STAGES proudly presented the world premiere of The Story Goes On: The Songs of Maltby & Shire, the inaugural workshop production from Emerson American Musical Creative (AMC).
