After more than three decades away, Reed Birney made a well-deserved return to the Broadway stage when Roundabout's production of Picnic opened earlier this month. He plays Howard Bevans, the small-town businessman who gets entangled with "old-maid schoolteacher" Rosemary Sydney (Elizabeth Marvel). Between his 1977 Broadway debut inGemini and his current turn as Howard, Birney found himself working off-Broadway. He gained critical acclaim for his work-particularly for his portrayal of the violent Ian in Sarah Kane's Blasted at SoHo Rep, a departure from his customary "nice-guy" roles. Milwaukee Chamber Theatre (MCT) presents the classic romantic comedy BUS STOP by William Inge, April 12-29, 2012. The production will be a collaborative venture with the University of Wisconsin - Parkside (UWP) theatre department with at least 25 students and faculty serving as actors, designers and production personnel. Broadway producer Darren Bagert has just revealed that there are plans to bring both PICNIC and KISS OF THE SPIDER WOMAN back to the Great White Way. The Tony-winner mentioned in a recent statement that a revival of PICNIC will arrive on Broadway in the 2011-12 season, featuring direction by Sam Gold. Additionally, Jose Rivera and Allan Baker are working onA new adaptation of SPIDER WOMAN, which is also scheduled to make it to Broadway in the 2011-12 season.
