Conductor Fabio Luisi Guides Zurich Opera, Metropolitan Opera and More in 2014-15

Grammy and ECHO Klassik Award-winning conductor Fabio Luisi continues to dominate the international stage in 2014-15. In his third season as General Music Director of the Zurich Opera, where the programming reflects ever more clearly his unique artistic vision, the preeminent Italian conductor leads new productions of Martinu's seldom-staged Juliette and Bellini's bel canto masterpiece I Capuleti e i Montecchi; revivals of Norma, Ariadne auf Naxos, and Die Frau ohne Schatten; and a trio of Viennese-themed programs with the Philharmonia Zurich. Embarking on his fourth season as Principal Conductor of the Metropolitan Opera, he looks forward to premiering important new stagings of Cavalleria rusticana, I Pagliacci, and The Merry Widow, as well as directing a star-studded revival of Macbeth.

When the pavement is sizzling, The Ridgefield Playhouse provides a cool respite to enjoy a show that has music, drama and romance -- Gounod's Romeo et Juliette starring acclaimed soprano Anna Netrebko and tenor Robert Alagna, from the Met Live in HD tonight, August 16, at 6 p.m. To make the evening even more special, Bernard's (20 West Lane, Ridgefield) is offering a special $45 prix-fixe menu, or a free glass of wine with dinner, the night of this event when tickets are presented; reservations suggested. General Director Plácido Domingo returns to the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion stage in the final production of LA Opera's 2013/14 season, Jules Massenet's Thaïs,starring soprano Nino Machaidze in the title role. Mr. Domingo will perform the baritone role of Athanaël, a monk whose determination to save the soul of a beautiful courtesan transforms into an unholy obsession. With these performances of Athanaël, Mr. Domingo will have sung 25 leading roles at LA Opera.
Olga Peretyatko Makes Met Debut in Bellini's I PURITANI Tonight

Acclaimed Russian soprano Olga Peretyatko will make her Met debut as Elvira in a revival of Bellini's I Puritani, with Met stars Lawrence Brownlee and Mariusz Kwiecien in their respective company role debuts as Arturo and Riccardo. Michele Mariotti conducts a cast that also includes Michele Pertusi as Elvira's father, Giorgio, in a revival of the bel canto opera opening tonight, April 17.

Students can apply to experience a summer of free opera!
2014 Merola Opera Program Student Membership Program will provide Bay Area high school and college students with free tickets to our summer operas, master classes and events in San Francisco this June, July and August. Each membership receives two tickets - one for the member and one for a guest.
