Four Festive Holiday Shows Make Their Way to Segerstrom Center This Winter
by BWW News Desk - Jul 25, 2014

Even with its 'endless summer' weather, Orange County certainly embraces the spirit of the holidays. This year, audiences can look forward to four unique and fun-filled seasonal shows at Segerstrom Center for the Arts. The holiday concert season at the Center kicks off with beloved American singer/songwriter Judy Collins in her show, Holidays and Hits (December 6) performing an array of holiday classics as well as her inspiring interpretations of folk standards. This is followed by the whimsical and critically acclaimed show DR. SEUSS' HOW THE GRINCH STOLE CHRISTMAS! THE MUSICAL (December 10 - 14). The enchanting and ever popular Celtic Woman returns with the spirited show Home for Christmas - The Symphony Tour (December 15), and, finally, the popular Fiesta Navidad with Mariachi Los Camperos de Nati Cano (December 23) rounds out the holiday programming with an evening of traditional Mexican songs and dance. BWW Reviews: Kritzerland at Sterling's Upstairs at The Federal Salutes Songwriter Dorothy Fields
by Shari Barrett - Jun 02, 2014

The 46th Kritzerland show on Sunday, June 1 featured one of the most influential female lyricists of all time, the great Dorothy Fields. In a time when Tin Pan Alley was almost exclusively a male-dominated club, Dorothy Fields rose to the top, first writing hit after hit with Jimmy McHugh, and later becoming one of the first female lyricists on Broadway and in film. Fields created some of the cleverest and most beautiful lyrics ever written, and was a master of the craft who forged the way for so many other talented female lyricists. There was no one like Dorothy Fields. (more...)

CABARET LIFE NYC: The Power of the 'Pan' and Catch-Up Show Reviews from a Long Cabaret Winter
by Stephen Hanks - May 12, 2014

If you are even a semi-regular reader of this column of reviews, you know that about every three or four months, I post a compilation of observations of shows from the previous quarter of the year. This cabaret critiquing mash up happens for a number of reasons, not the least of which is that I admittedly see too many cabaret shows for the amount of time I have to promptly review them (and then, of course, the usual writer's procrastination sets in). So I have to prioritize the timeliness of the reviews based on the prestige of the performer, the length of a show run, the strength (or lack thereof) of the performance, etc. The quality of the shows in these compilations—which can range from a half dozen to a dozen reviews in one shot—are usually a mixed bag of outright raves, qualified positives, and constructive pans (I'm not a fan of the word “negative” in the reviewer lexicon). With that in mind here are a collection of cabaret show reviews going back to the start of a very harsh winter. (more...)
