The 2017 Lucille Lortel Awards for Outstanding Achievement Off-Broadway were handed out last night to recipients in 19 categories, with three honorary awards also bestowed. The Lortel Awards were distributed in a ceremony at NYU Skirball Center hosted by actor and comedian Taran Killam. This year's event was once again a benefit for The Actors Fund.

The Sunscreen Film Festival reveals today the award recipients at the 12th annual event. The festival announced the winners at the awards ceremony on Saturday evening.

When he played Judas in 'Jesus Christ Superstar' at STAGE 1 Theater in Newark, Linda and Nick Hodges of BroadwayWorld.com raved: 'The show should be renamed 'Nikita Burshteyn Superstar.' The theater should be filled with talent agents waiting to give him an offer.' When he played Tony in 'West Side Story' at Broadway by the Bay in Redwood City, Joanne Engelhardt of the Palo Alto Daily News gushed: 'With Tom Cruise-good looks and an angelic voice, Burshteyn is the real deal.' And when he did his San Francisco cabaret act, 'Livin' Nikita Loca,' Richard Connema of Talkin' Broadway compared his 'full-throated voice and flawless phrasing' to Jonathan Groff's.

Nikki M. James has signed on as a series regular for a currently untitled NBC medical drama pilot from Warren Leight, Paul Haggis and Sony TV.

Groundhog Day, the new musical featuring music and lyrics by Tim Minchin and a book by Danny Rubin, and directed by Matthew Warchus, begins Broadway performances tomorrow night, Thursday March 16, at the August Wilson Theatre (245 West 52nd Street). Opening night is set for Monday, April 17.

Every so often a new artist comes along with a debut album that not only raises eyebrows, but curiosity in that the songs are so perfectly matched with the talent. Opening tonight on Broadway, Come From Away spotlights the town of Gander, Newfoundland, which became the temporary home of over 6,000 passengers whose planes were rerouted during the 9/11 attacks. In its dramatization of real-life figures such as Beverley Bass, a stranded pilot portrayed by Jenn Colella, and Claude Elliott, the Gander mayor brought to life by Joel Hatch, the musical provides a historical recount of the week following 9/11, heavily inspired by true stories of the compassion and camaraderie that came about in Gander.
