Tom Aldredge BIO

Tom Aldredge was a prolific American actor who appeared in numerous Broadway productions throughout his career. Born in Dayton, Ohio in 1928, Aldredge began his acting career in the 1950s, performing in various regional theater productions before making his Broadway debut in 1959 in the play "The Nervous Set."

Over the course of his career, Aldredge appeared in over 30 Broadway productions, earning critical acclaim for his performances. He received Tony Award nominations for his work in "Sticks and Bones," "On Golden Pond," and "Twentieth Century," among others.

One of Aldredge's most notable Broadway roles was as the Narrator/Mysterious Man in Stephen Sondheim's "Into the Woods." He originated the role in the 1987 production and reprised it in the 2002 revival, earning a Tony Award nomination for both performances.

In addition to his work on stage, Aldredge also appeared in numerous films and television shows. He had a recurring role on the hit TV series "The Sopranos," playing Hugh DeAngelis, the father-in-law of the show's protagonist, Tony Soprano. He also appeared in films such as "The Electric Horseman," "The Seduction of Joe Tynan," and "Cold Mountain."

Aldredge was known for his versatility as an actor, seamlessly transitioning between comedic and dramatic roles. He was also a skilled character actor, able to bring depth and nuance to even the smallest of roles.

Throughout his career, Aldredge remained dedicated to the theater, often returning to Broadway after stints in film and television. He was a beloved figure in the theater community, known for his generosity and kindness to his fellow actors.

Sadly, Aldredge passed away in 2011 at the age of 83. His legacy lives on through the many performances he gave throughout his career, both on stage and on screen. He will be remembered as one of the great character actors of his generation, a true master of his craft.

Throwing Out My CDs by Ben Rimalower: INTO THE WOODS

Well, my little piggies and wolves, the next CDs I'm eliminating from my apartment are all the recordings of all the versions of Into The Woods. I'm talking London cast, movie version, Broadway revival and ouch, the one that's gonna leave a gaping hole in my heart, that beautiful Original Broadway Cast Recording starring Joanna Gleason, Chip Zien, Tom Aldredge, Robert Westenberg and above them all as the Witch (receiving the deal-breaking top billing the producers previously refused Patti LuPone when they offered her the role) Bernadette Peters.

BWW Review: INTO THE WOODS at Gettysburg Community Theatre

INTO THE WOODS is arguably a staple of American theatre. As one of the incomparable Stephen Sondheim's most recognizable shows, INTO THE WOODS is performed continuously by a multitude of theatres across America. From middle schools, to universities, to regional theatre and beyond, an active audience member can often find at least one theatre in their area presenting INTO THE WOODS in their current season. A show with this much popularity can begin to feel trite, and theatres may struggle to find originality in their own production of this often-told tale. However, this is not the case at Gettysburg Community Theatre. Their production of INTO THE WOODS trades elaborate sets and costumes for creativity and simplicity, allowing them to truly focus on the issues and moral questions the story presents. The unique twists sprinkled throughout the show are then facilitated through a host of talent, making Gettysburg Community Theatre's production of INTO THE WOODS not to be missed.

Exclusive: Moments in the Woods- Inside the INTO THE WOODS Original Cast Reunion at BAM

Can you believe it's been almost 28 years since the original production of Into the Woods opened on Broadway? Seems like only yesterday my mother was dragging a 6-year-old me, literally kicking and screaming, from below the marquee of the Martin Beck Theatre (now the Al Hirschfeld) to the Winter Garden Theatre where Cats was playing. (I wanted desperately to see Into the Woods, but a family 'friend' told my parents that Cats would be more appropriate for my age group. Thanks for ruining my life, lady.) In the right light, you can still to this day see my claw marks scraped along 45th Street.
