Ingrid Bergman BIO

Ingrid Bergman was a Swedish actress who became one of the most iconic and beloved performers of the 20th century. Born on August 29, 1915, in Stockholm, Sweden, Bergman was the daughter of a Swedish father and a German mother. She began her acting career in Sweden in the mid-1930s, and quickly gained a reputation as a talented and versatile performer.
In 1939, Bergman starred in the Swedish film "Intermezzo," which caught the attention of Hollywood producers. She was soon signed to a contract with David O. Selznick, and made her American film debut in the 1940 film "L'Amour fou." Bergman's breakthrough role came later that year, when she starred opposite Humphrey Bogart in the classic film "Casablanca." Her performance as Ilsa Lund, the woman torn between Bogart's Rick Blaine and her husband, was both heartbreaking and unforgettable.
Bergman went on to star in a number of other classic films, including "Gaslight" (1944), for which she won an Academy Award for Best Actress, "Notorious" (1946), and "Anastasia" (1956). She also appeared on Broadway, starring in the play "Joan of Lorraine" in 1946.
In the 1950s, Bergman's personal life became the subject of scandal when she left her husband and young daughter to be with Italian director Roberto Rossellini. The couple had three children together, and Bergman's career suffered as a result of the scandal. However, she continued to work in both Europe and America, and won her second Academy Award for Best Actress for her role in the 1956 film "Anastasia."
In the 1970s, Bergman made a triumphant return to Hollywood, appearing in a number of successful films, including "Murder on the Orient Express" (1974) and "Autumn Sonata" (1978). She also continued to work in Europe, starring in the acclaimed television mini-series "A Woman Called Golda" in 1982.
Bergman's final film role was in the 1982 film "Höstsonaten" (Autumn Sonata), directed by Ingmar Bergman. The film was a critical success, and Bergman's performance as a concert pianist reconciling with her estranged daughter was widely praised. Ingrid Bergman passed away on August 29, 1982, her 67th birthday. She left behind a legacy as one of the greatest actresses of all time, and a woman whose personal and professional life captured the imagination of audiences around the world.

Review: HEDDA GABLER, Reading Rep Theatre

Henrik Ibsen’s Hedda Gabler has been a vehicle for many actresses to show off their dramatic chops. But when you have Diana Rigg, Ingrid Bergman and Ruth Wilson previously inhabit the titular role, it’s easy to see why. Often dubbed “the female Hamlet,” Ibsen’s titular story breathes new life in Harriet Madeley’s queer spin premiering at Reading Rep.
