THE GREEN ROOM 42, Broadway’s Funkiest Cabaret Club, presents multi-hyphenate artists Rheanna Atendido (Monstress) and Justin Huertas (Lizard Boy) in We’ve Battled Monsters Before: In Concert on August 22, 2023.

Almost every time you see a major production of Anything Goes, it'll vary in some way from the last one you saw. There are at least three licensable editions of the show, from as far back as the 1930s and as recent as 2022. The song stack is in perpetual flux between a long list of Cole Porter greatest hits and B-sides, and there are several characters who appear only in certain editions of the show. About a decade ago, the show underwent a reputation update from 'park and bark' diva and vaudeville standard to an all-singing-all-dancing showcase for triple-threat performers. It's a lot of wigs on a very old head, but somehow the show still works.

In this episode, Jayke is joined by playwright, actor, and musician, Justin Huertas to talk about his show, 'Lizard Boy', coming to off-broadway! A Seattle based creator, Huertas shares his artistic process in creating musicals, and what it's like to perform in his own works. He also touches on his experience as a queer Filipino man in the theater industry, and how his upbringing in Seattle has affected his life's work.

He’s a Seattle favorite. He inspires magic and wonder and just brings a smile to the faces of those who see him. No, I’m not talking about Justin Huertas, composer of the locally (and beyond) renowned musical “Lizard Boy” (about to make its Off-Broadway premiere in NYC, by the way), although I might as well be. No, I’m referring to the Fremont staple of the Troll statue under the Aurora Bridge. That devilish creature clutching a Volkswagen Beetle is beloved by all who pass through. Well now Huertas has come along with his own take on how this stone giant came to be, with his long awaited “Lydia and the Troll”, currently playing at the Seattle Rep. And a few technical issues aside, it’s just more wonderful from this up-and-coming composer who is about to take New York by storm.

Today’s subject Justin Huertas is currently living his theatre life as the composer/lyricist of Kennedy Center’s World Premiere Commission Musical The Mortification of Fovea Munson. The show begins performances March fourth and plays through the nineteenth in Kennedy Center’s Family Theater.
