Alexander Dodge BIO
Alexander Dodge is a Tony-nominated scenic designer known for his innovative and visually stunning designs for Broadway productions. Born in Washington D.C., Dodge grew up in a family of artists and was exposed to the world of theater from a young age. He studied architecture at Yale University before transitioning to scenic design and receiving his MFA from the Yale School of Drama.
Dodge's first Broadway credit came in 2007 with the revival of "Butley," starring Nathan Lane. Since then, he has designed sets for a number of Broadway productions, including "Present Laughter," "Anastasia," "A Gentleman's Guide to Love and Murder," and "The Hunchback of Notre Dame." His work on "Gentleman's Guide" earned him a Tony nomination for Best Scenic Design of a Musical in 2014.
In addition to his work on Broadway, Dodge has designed sets for numerous regional theaters across the country, including the Guthrie Theater, the Arena Stage, and the La Jolla Playhouse. He has also worked extensively in opera, designing sets for productions at the Metropolitan Opera, the Lyric Opera of Chicago, and the Houston Grand Opera.
Dodge's designs are known for their attention to detail and their ability to transport audiences to another world. His set for "Anastasia," which recreated the opulence of imperial Russia, was particularly praised for its grandeur and elegance. His work on "The Hunchback of Notre Dame" was also highly acclaimed for its use of Gothic architecture and innovative use of projections.
In addition to his work as a scenic designer, Dodge is also an accomplished painter and illustrator. His artwork has been exhibited at galleries across the country, and he has been commissioned to create illustrations for a number of publications, including The New Yorker and The New York Times.
Dodge's most recent Broadway credit was the 2019 production of "Tina: The Tina Turner Musical," which tells the story of the legendary singer's life and career. His set for the show, which included a rotating stage and a giant video screen, was praised for its energy and its ability to capture the excitement of Turner's live performances.
Overall, Alexander Dodge is a visionary artist whose designs have helped to shape the look and feel of some of the most memorable productions in recent Broadway history.
