Showtunes Theatre Company Celebrates Its 20th Anniversary at Town Hall

Showtunes Theatre Company produced its first musical in concert on January 22, 2000 at Town Hall in Seattle. That first show was Anyone Can Whistle, a Stephen Sondheim/Arthur Laurents cult favorite that showcased 30+ local performers and musicians and enjoyed a sold-out-one-night-only performance. Now, 20 years and one month to the day, Showtunes has produced 40 musicals in concert, multiple cabarets and special events produced in and around Seattle since January of 2000 on the very stage it all began - Town Hall Seattle.

BWW Review: ACT's THE YEAR OF MAGICAL THINKING Gives an Open and Honest Look at Grief

a?oeThis will happen to you.a?? That's one of the opening sentiments of Joan Didion's a?oeThe Year of Magical Thinkinga??, currently playing at ACT. a?oeThis will happen to you.a?? She's referring, of course, to the fact that everyone, sometime in their life, will have to deal with the death of a loved one. Maybe you already have. Maybe you're dealing with it right now. Or maybe you've been lucky enough to avoid it thus far, but it will happen to you. How you will deal with it, well, that's the question. But how Didion dealt with it and the eloquence she used in conveying her personal tragedy to the world is the crux of the play and the folks at ACT handle that with honesty, vulnerability and openness.

BWW Review: ALL'S WELL THAT ENDS WELL at Seattle Shakespeare ticks all the boxes.

With all the focus dedicated to the language and story, Seattle Shakespeare breaths new life into this old classic while maintaining all its traditions. While current trends rely on new interpretations, new locations, different time periods, this production stays true to the Bard and delivers the goods. ALL'S WELL THAT ENDS WELL is a bittersweet tale of love, war, and relationships. The show questions why we love who we love and who is deserving of love, romantic and familial.

BWW 2018 Seattle Critic's Choice Awards (Jay's Picks)

Dear Readers, it has been one crazy year with some amazing theater. You know it's true. We've had dead teens riding a roller coaster, demonic puppets, and an ageless guy with a picture of himself in his attic. And, of course, a hip-hop founding father sweeping through town. But let's not talk about the juggernaut when we have such amazing things right here that blew us all away. At least they blew me away. So, let's talk about what blew me away this past year and what I have chosen to give my BWW 2018 Seattle Critic's Choice Awards (Jay's Picks) to (not to mention all those honorable mentions since often I can't limit myself to just one).

BWW Review: ACT Negotiates a Stunningly Solid Piece with OSLO

In 1993 a few Norwegian politicians managed the impossible, to get the Israelis and Palestinians to negotiate a peace. What sounds even more impossible is that they all kept it secret. Now this may not sound like the riveting topic for a three-hour play but what J.T. Rogers' 'Oslo', currently playing at ACT, does it to go beyond the facts of the accords and examines the humanity that made the accords possible and that kind of conflict makes for a tense and often times funny piece presented with a stunning ensemble from ACT.

BWW Review: Book-It Deliciously Paints the Original PICTURE OF DORIAN GRAY

If you think you know Oscar Wilde's 'The Picture of Dorian Gray' you may want to think again. In fact, many only know the most basic plot based on its many references in popular culture throughout the years. But whether you're a novice or a die-hard Dorian Gray aficionado, you're in for a treat from Book-It as they've based their adaptation on the only recently published original manuscript that was deemed too racy for Victorian England. But it's here now complete with all its taboo subjects the way Wilde intended and Book-It's production is, in a word, delicious.
