When bright, liberal, Harvard Law School graduate Cat (Kerry Warren) embarks on a nerve-wracking clerkship with Justice Scalia, she discovers him to be both an infuriating sparring partner and an unexpected mentor. How will their relationship affect one of the most incendiary cases ever to reach the nation's highest court? The Little Theatre of Mechanicsburg sits plainly on the side of a small road in Mechanicsburg, Pennsylvania, unassuming to all those who pass by. It does not flaunt itself on flashing advertisements or a grandiose outward facade, and this in fact adds to the effortless charm that meets a theatre-goer as soon as they step through the door. But while the stage itself may be lacking in size, the performances presented there compensate for space with an abundance of talent. While the reviewer has only been privilege to one show at this establishment thus far, she is glad that she was treated to the vastly entertaining humor of PLAZA SUITE by Neil Simon.

One can only imagine why a person chooses to write, filling the desolate borders of blank pages with untold stories; one can only imagine the reasons. It probably more often than not has to do with a need to create and less so the recognition or desire to see what comes of it. To dedicate a life to words and giving them the power of the soul's expression is something truly special, especially when fact and creation collide in a beautifully turbulent way. Holden, written and directed by Anisa George, is the first time an audience can see reality and fiction so intertwined to tell the various stories of a single life, shown by characters who are, to quote Fitzgerald for a moment, "within and without." Now being performed at the New Ohio Theatre, Holden brings about the complexities of late author J.D. Salinger's life through personal issues that arose because of those words he shared with the world…and those he chose not to.

Evan Linder's new play BYHALIA, MISSISSIPPI begins with a scene familiar to those in the audience: a mother and her adult daughter squabbling. The daughter, Laurel, is several months pregnant. And while her mother just wants to be present for the birth of her grandchild, Laurel has had enough. But as the play progresses, we soon learn that Laurel and her husband Jim may not be quite ready for the demands of parenthood. And in a surprising twist following the birth of the child, Laurel and Jim-who are self-declared "white trash"-must also come face-to-face with some harsh realities and confront long-standing, deeply embedded racist beliefs. In this way, Linder's play provides striking food for thought on contemporary social issues, while also becoming a specific portrait of the life of this one couple. And while Chicago audiences may largely be unfamiliar with the small-town Southern lifestyle of BYHALIA'S characters, he makes us feel for these flawed personalities.

The full cast of Disney's Aladdin, a new musical based on the Academy Award winning animated film, began rehearsals today in New York City. Aladdin will launch at Toronto's Ed Mirvish Theatre (formerly the Canon) November 1, 2013 to January 5, 2014. Opening night there is November 21, 2013.
