BWW Review: Jersey City's Grace Church turns into Elsinore for HAMLET by Shakespeare@

Church, thy name is theater. Shakespeare@ kicks off their inaugural run in Jersey City with a sharp production of HAMLET. William Shakespeare's Danish tragedy of revenge and mental insanity transforms the space of Grace Church Van Vorst, a New Jersey Episcopal church on the National Registry of Historic Places. The first few minutes of this HAMLET are in Wittenberg as the prince studies beside his school chums with inaudible whispers; the rest, as they say, is silence. The audience does not hear any dialogue until Hamlet begins his famous 'to be or not to be' soliloquy, moved up from Act 3 to be juxtaposed with Hamlet reading a letter and learning of his father's death. Beneath the scene, the sound of what seems to be a ticking clock quickly turns into the pulsating heart beat of Hamlet as he begins his swift descent into madness.

David Hargreaves Joins Cast of Shakespeare@ Inaugural Production Of HAMLET

The Legendary David Hargraves is the voice of the ghost of Hamlet's father in the Shakespeare@ inaugural production of HAMLET, which begins performances Thursday, March 28th. HAMLET opens on Sunday, March 31st at Grace Church Van Vorst (39 Erie Street, Jersey City - a five-minute walk from the Path Train). Directed by Shakespeare@ Artistic Director Sean Hagerty, HAMLET is set against the stunning architecture of Grace Church Van Vorst, offering a suspenseful reverence, aided by the masterful storytelling of a cast of veteran and rising stars of stage, television and film. Tickets, priced at $25, are available at shakespeare-at.org.

BWW Review: RING OF FIRE, Johnny Cash Jukebox Musical, Delights at Porthouse

Johnny Cash, 'The Man in Black,' was noted as a somber singer of such songs as 'I Walk the Line,' 'If I Were a Carpenter,' and 'Ring of Fire.' The latter was chosen as the title for Richard Maltby, Jr.'s jukebox musical, now on stage at Porthouse Theatre, which loosely centers on the trials and tribulations of Cash's life. While not autobiographical, per se, there is enough of the tale of the man to gain an understanding of Cash, his music, his strong belief in social causes, and his personal problems.

James Franco's Studio 4 to Present 1959 PINK THUNDERBIRD at Producers Club, 10/5-6

1959 Pink Thunderbird is comprised of two comedic one-acts, Laundry & Bourbon and Lone Star. Both plays are centered around a Vietnam veteran's return home to Maynard, Texas, in the late 1970s. Laundry & Bourbon is the story of three small town women who love to gossip, even at the possible expense of one of their marriages. Lone Star is about Roy, a man who loves three things: his country, his beautiful wife and his 1959 Pink Thunderbird convertible - not necessarily in that order. Roy's world is about to unravel with the arrival of an old high school acquaintance. The show gives a hilarious look at marriage, brotherly love, and the slow-paced lifestyle that existed in a small West Texas town during the 70's.

Bergen County Players to Present CLYBOURNE PARK

There is no doubt that race is a sensitive issue, as borne out by numerous events across the nation over the past six months. It can be difficult to explore, and while many politicians and social scientists call for a national conversation, it is often the arts world that leads the way in holding up a mirror to American society about this topic. While most take a serious approach, the Bergen County Players, one of the region's most acclaimed theatre companies, has decided it is also possible to face the subject head on by presenting the wickedly funny and provocative Tony and Pulitzer Prize award-winning play Clybourne Park.
