African-American Shakespeare Company concludes its 29th Season with Pipeline by MacArthur Fellowship recipient Dominique Morisseau.

The much anticipated production of Death of a Salesmen has been cancelled due to the untimely and tragic death of Richard D. May, who was killed in a car accident.

The 29th season of San Francisco's African-American Shakespeare Company will see its Artistic Director L. Peter Callender taking on two of what he terms “bucket list roles.” First as Willy Loman in Death of a Salesman in October, followed by Shylock in the Merchant of Venice in May.

The African-American Shakespeare Company will present for only the second time in its history, Romeo & Juliet. This updated version from the company's Artistic Director L. Peter Callender will stay true to what Shakespeare wrote but with a different ending. 

Inspired by the company's upcoming presentation of Paul Moravec and Mark Campbell's opera, The Shining, based on Stephen King's novel, Opera Parallèle will host a benefit evening, A Night at The Overlook Hotel … No Work – All Play, Wednesday, April 26 at the historic Lodge at the Regency Center, 1300 Van Ness Avenue.

San Jose Stage Company (Randall King, Artistic Director and Cathleen King, Executive Director) has announced the full cast and creative team for The Stage's upcoming production of SATCHMO AT THE WALDORF by Terry Teachout. Directed by Ted Lange, SATCHMO AT THE WALDORF will run from February 1 – 26, 2023 at San Jose Stage Company.

Under the direction of Stephanie Gularte, this award-winning comedy features a recognized cast of L. Peter Callender (Torvald), Emilia Sargent (Nora), Karla Hartley (Anne Marie), and Bria Matthews (Emmy.)

Playwright Lucas Hnath was born and raised in Orlando, Florida. Later his move to New York led him to study Pre-Med, but soon he changed his major to Dramatic Writing, where he studied at Tisch School for the Arts earning a BFA, and subsequently following an MFA. Hnath is the playwright of 10 Dramatic works. His Broadway Debut and most notably his best work A Doll's House Part 2, debuted on Broadway in April of 2017 and closed in September later that year. Commissioned by South Coast Repertory in Costa Mesa, California, Hnath's contemporary spin/sequel to the Ibsen classic starred Laurie Metcalf, Chris Cooper, Jayne Houdyshell, and Condola Rashad. Metcalf later went on to win a Tony Award for Best Performance by an Actress in a Leading Role in a Play for her portrayal of Nora Helmer. Subsequently, Hnath's work was also a nominee for Best Play at the time.

In the season opener for TampaRep, freedom, choice, and responsibility are on display.   Playing four shows a week through Nov 20, 2022 A Doll's House Part 2 by Lucas Hnath will open wide the door to Nora, who famously left her husband and children in the original play by Henrik Ibsen. One doesn't need to know “Part 1” to enjoy this funny and compelling new look at divorce in the modern age.

Following a two-year hiatus, Elm Shakespeare Company will return to Edgerton Park for the 2022 Season with Shakespeare's The Tempest. Producing Artistic Director, Rebecca Goodheart, returns to direct the production which features nationally acclaimed actor and Artistic Director of African American Shakespeare Company, L. Funded by The Black Seed, the African-American Shakespeare Company & The CRAFT Institute have come together to form the African Diasporic Network that will debut Echoes of Us: Now and Always July 15-17 at the Marines Memorial Theatre. 

The Tampa Repertory Theatre has announced a new season of three plays for 2022-2023, continuing its collaboration with local venues and artists.

An award-winning and impactful theatre company headed by Randall King, Founding Artistic Director, and Cathleen King, Executive Director, The Stage has curated a diverse array of acclaimed hits, custom adaptations, and exciting new works for its 2022-2023 season including two world premieres, a regional premiere, Tony-honored plays, and an exciting musical capping the season.

The African-American Shakespeare Company will feature a total of 5 productions during its 2022-23 season that will include an original work Echoes of Us, curated and produced by the company in conjunction with The Craft Institute's African Diasporic Network and funded by The Black Seed Fund. Echoes of Us will be directed by famed actress and director Michele Shay and will run July 14-17 at the Marines Memorial Theater.

Play On Shakespeare, the not-for-profit organization dedicated to exploring the world of Shakespeare in performance through translation and adaptation, today announces their spring/summer 2022 season. Lue Douthit, President and Co-Founder says: 'Well, the theater world is definitely opening up. We literally mean 'world' (Prague, Guam, England) and suddenly there are ten professional productions of Play On translations opening in the next few months, including two in San Francisco (African-American Shakespeare Company and Cal Shakes). We are delighted that there are so many opportunities for audiences to gather together again to see and hear Shakespeare differently. Play on!'

The African-American Shakespeare Company returns this April with their first-ever production of Richard II. In addition to it being in a modern verse translation, the director L. Peter Callender is structuring it as a memory play, where the narrative begins at the end and works its way forward.
