Sharing the experience of life in the extreme is the stuff of poetry. Expressed through the voice - an experiment in speech and song - we can discover something about the endurance of Anne Sexton's complex journey. The enfleshment of her poetry through speech, song, and performance breathes life into those words, even as the poet, herself, makes an ultimate exit.

PTP/NYC (Potomac Theatre Project), in association with Middlebury College, will open its summer program tonight, as part of its 34th year, running July 9 - August 16, 2021.

Each show premieres virtually on Friday at 7:30pm ET (July 9, July 23 & August 13). After the Friday premiere the stream will be available On Demand for four days - then disappears. Reservations are required to receive a link and password.

New Repertory Theatre continues its third annual Next Rep Black Box Festival with Colm Toibin's THE TESTAMENT OF MARY, a controversial one-woman play that reimagines the life and attitudes of Mary some twenty years after the crucifixion of her son. Artistic Director Jim Petosa directs Paula Langton in an impressive solo performance, with texture added by lighting designer Matthew Guminski and composer/sound designer Dewey Dellay.

New Repertory Theatre announces its 2015-2016 SEASON: IDENTITY. Featuring eight productions in three theatre spaces, next season includes five plays in the Charles Mosesian Theater, beginning with Broken Glass, presented in celebration of the centennial of the birth of playwright Arthur Miller; A Number, Caryl Churchill's stark and startling drama; The Snow Queen, a new musical co-written and directed by former New Rep Artistic Director Rick Lombardo; Blackberry Winter, a National New Play Network Rolling World Premiere; and Freud's Last Session, a razor-sharp, witty, and much anticipated Boston Area Premiere. Our third annual Next Rep Black Box Festival will include two companion pieces whose setting is shared, but whose time is separated by 2000 years: Via Dolorosa by David Hare and The Testament of Mary by Colm To?ibi?n. The Festival will also include the Next Rep World Premiere of Baltimore by Kirsten Greenidge, co-presented with Boston Center for American Performance (BCAP).

Despite all of its violence and disturbing themes, Director Jim Petosa and company find the humor in ASSASSINS and are able to make the characters come alive as people with flaws, rather than monsters. In the controversial Stephen Sondheim and John Weidman musical, the cure for what ails them is to kill a President and the 1991 show strikes a chord in our gun-happy culture. A terrific lineup of voices handles the Sondheim score with aplomb.

Feminist fantasy about three time-traveling Victorian-era women who set out to explore 'Terra Incognita' is playwright Eric Overmyer's paean to language and the art of the spoken word. His craftsmanship as a writer is on display in ON THE VERGE, but the quartet of accomplished, committed actors aren't enough to keep everyone onboard until the end of the ride.
