The world premiere of Kristen Adele Calhoun’s Black Cypress Bayou has already begun at the Geffen Playhouse. Tiffany Nichole Greene directs the cast of: Amber Chardae Robinson, Brandee Evans, Angela Lewis and Kimberly Scott. After a successful opening weekend, Kristen managed to find some time to answer a few of my queries.

For more than four decades, The St. Louis Black Rep’s founder and Producing Director, Ron Himes has dedicated his life to staging productions from the African American perspective to heighten the social and cultural awareness of audiences in the St Louis area and beyond. He has produced and directed more than 200 plays at The Black Rep, but his life’s work goes well beyond producing, directing and staging theatrical events. The Black Rep’s award winning education programs that he created provides training and experience for children, teens and interns seeking education and a career in the arts. These programs provide an opportunity for youth to explore their talents and chart a course for the future.

Playwrights Kristen Adele Calhoun and Michael Thomas Walker's new drama, Canfield Drive, received its world premier this month, after being co-commissioned by 651 Arts in partnership with The St. Louis Black Repertory Company and the National Performance Network. Under development for the past four years, this breathtaking new play takes a hard, serious look at incidents and attitudes surrounding the August 14, 2014 fatal police shooting of Michael Brown, the Ferguson protests that followed, and the #BlackLivesMatter movement. Calhoun and Walker, whose work is well-researched and hard-hitting, uses a documentary theatre structure, its many short scenes based on interviews from people around Ferguson and around the nation whose voices might not necessarily have been heard in traditional media coverage.

This summer, Black Angus Productions is pleased to present BUBBA, written and performed by Michael Thomas Walker and directed by Melissa Firlit, as part of the 18th Annual New York International Fringe Festival-FringeNYC. Winner of Best Variety Show 2012 at the United Solo Festival, BUBBA is a son's journey to the South where he learns the truth about his father's mysterious death. Through laughter and tears, he discovers closure in the strangest of places. A combination of song, dance and gut-busting honesty, BUBBA is the journey to discover the truth.
