Versatile chanteuse Storm Large opens the Princeton Symphony Orchestra (PSO)'s all-new Princeton Festival on Friday, June 10 at 7:30pm. She sings the dual Anna role in Kurt Weill's The Seven Deadly Sins in a concert performance of the work with the PSO.

Recently elected Princeton Symphony Orchestra (PSO) Board of Trustees Chair Stephanie Wedeking notified fellow Trustees, board advisors, and staff this week of the July 31 legal closing finalizing the merger of the orchestra and The Princeton Festival.

Responding to concerns centered on the spread of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), the Princeton Symphony Orchestra (PSO) is canceling its Saturday and Sunday March 21-22 Stefan Jackiw Plays Mendelssohn concerts at Richardson Auditorium along with ancillary and community events through early April.

On Wednesday, March 18 at 7 pm, Princeton-based composer and conversationalist extraordinaire Julian Grant tells all­­a?"or maybe just enougha?"about his life, travels, and musical adventures in China and Central Asia at a free Soundtracks talk at the Princeton Public Library. While living in Hong Kong, he hosted a classical music radio show. He also lived in Tokyo and, from 2007-10, in Beijing, where he worked with the Beijing New Music Ensemble and attempted to master the yang qin (butterfly harp). This immersion in learning a traditional Chinese instrument proved to be the genesis of a suite of music titled a?"a??a??a?? (Five Generations, One House), a work soon to be given its US premiere by the Princeton Symphony Orchestra.

Mr. Jackiw performs Felix Mendelssohn's Violin Concerto in E Minor on a program with the US premiere of Princeton-based composer Julian Grant's work a?'a??a??a?? (Five Generations - One House) and a performance of Ludwig Van Beethoven's Symphony No. 2 in D Major, Op. 36 in honor of the composer's 250th birthday. Edward T. Cone Music Director Rossen Milanov conducts.

At Sunday's All Mozart concert, the Princeton Symphony Orchestra (PSO) saluted ten years with Maestro Rossen Milanov at the helm by announcing the public phase of The Next 10! - a campaign celebrating Milanov's 10th anniversary while building a dynamic future for the orchestra. Maestro Milanov conducts the concert, given in tribute to the memory of Edward T. Cone, professor, pianist, composer, and patron of the arts. Both performances are at historic Richardson Auditorium, Alexander Hall on the campus of Princeton University.

Was the pairing of Iain Bell and Mark Campbell--respectively, composer and librettist of New York City Opera's (NYCO) world premiere STONEWALL--'love at first sight”? I asked them. We were at the workshop in New York earlier this month that allowed them and director Leonard Foglia to cross the t's and dot the i's (and hear their new work performed).

La MaMa presents the premiere of legendary playwright Jean-Claude van Itallie's The Fat Lady Sings at La MaMa's Downstairs Theater (66 East 4th Street). Directed by Drama Desk Award winner David Schweizer, the production is scheduled to begin previews on March 21, 2019, with an opening night on March 25, 2019 (running run through April 7, 2019). Short on financial resources but long on ambition, Utopia Opera started its eighth season last weekend with a New York premiere: Thea Musgrave's THE STORY OF HARRIET TUBMAN. It's a 90-minute chamber version, orchestrated by composer Julian Grant, of Musgrave's full-length, two-act HARRIET, THE WOMAN CALLED MOSES, which debuted in 1985 at the Virginia Opera, with some fervent portrayals by its cast of about two dozen, including the stellar soprano MaKayla McDonald as Harriet and mezzo Karmesha Peake as her mother, Rit.

Juilliard announces the appointment of tenorWilliam Burden to Juilliard's voice faculty in Juilliard's Ellen and James S. Marcus Institute for Vocal Arts. Mr. Burden's appointment will begin in fall of 2018. Mr. Burden has performed at the world's greatest opera houses, including the Metropolitan Opera, San Francisco Opera, Teatro alla Scala, Glyndebourne, Santa Fe Opera, and the Bayerische Staatsoper, among many others.
