JAY BRAZEAU BIO

As a performer, Jay is seemingly everywhere. Audiences all over North America recognize him for his television work on series and in movies, including SUPERNATURAL, DIRK GENTLEY, PSYCH,STARGATE SGI, MACGYVER, BATES MOTEL, ROGUE, WEST WING, THE X FILES, AIR BUD and THE KILLING. And major films DOUBLE JEOPARDY, WATCHMEN, INSOMNIA, BEST IN SHOW, COOL RUNNING, WE’RE NO ANGELS, THE POSSESSION, LITTLE WOMEN, ANDRE, HEAD OVER HEELS, HORNS and many others. Even if you haven’t seen him, you’ve certainly HEARD him in countless voice roles for cartoons from “Sabrina: The Animated Series” to “My Little Pony”. Plus voicing the lead in the NFB Oscar-nominated THE BIG SNIT.

Theatre audiences have been treated to Jay in some of his favourite roles: Man in the Chair in the National Arts Centre and Vancouver Playhouse productions of “The Drowsy Chaperone”, Tevye in Rubicon Theater’s “Fiddler on the Roof” in Ventura California, “The Goat” at the Presentaion House Theatre, Cyrano in Pittsburgh’s Three Rivers Shakespeare Festival, The Wiz in Andrew Lloyd Webber’s North American Tour of “Wizard of Oz” and the wonderful Edna Turnblad in the Canadian premiere of “Hairspray” .

In theatre Jay directed Eric McCormack and Molly Parker in “The Passion of Dracula” and Bruno Gerussi for the Arts Club in “Breaking Legs”. He has also navigated many an original work, has Fringe credits and directed the fabulous “POOR” at the Firehall Art’s Centre. He has, likewise put his stamp on “Three Viewings” with Kevin McNulty and Jillian Fargey, as well as “Old Love” with Suzanne Ristic and Vince Metcalfe. And Jay was a natural and perfect choice to direct First Artists Vancouver premiere of “Bad Jews”. He was definitely an artist in touch with the play’s biting humour, razor-sharp timing, and deeply moving messages.

Jay has most recently completed work in Guilermo Del Toro’s production of ANTLERS, the CBC mini-Series UNSPEAKABLE, and looks forward to returning to his role on Hallmark’s very popular GARAGE SALE MYSTERY.

BWW Reviews: WIZARD OF OZ Is A Decidedly Mixed Bag at the Fox Theatre

I hesitated to review the current touring production of THE WIZARD OF OZ (Fox Theatre, through May 18, 2014), which has been adapted by Andrew Lloyd Webber and Jeremy Sams, because even though I thought it told essentially the same tale as the original, I didn't particularly care for it. There's certainly a lot more spectacle than you'd find in your typical production, but the script is so camped up, and the additional songs so mundane, that it comes off as trying that they may have been trying a little too hard when they updated the show. In any event, the flashy and colorful show seemed to appeal to the crowd, but I'm wondering if they're aware of how much it's been pared down technically so that it could tour and play different size venues.

BWW Reviews: This OZ Less Great, More Terrible

Off to see the Wizard? Stop by Oz Park, instead.

BWW Reviews: Theatre Under the Stars' THE WIZARD OF OZ is Entirely Charming

Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer's beloved classic film THE WIZARD OF OZ has been re-adapted for the stage by Andrew Lloyd Webber and Jeremy Sams. The splashy show features Harold Arlen's original music and E.Y. Harburg's original lyrics, with additional lyrics by Tim Rice and additional music by Andrew Lloyd Webber. Flying audiences over the rainbow, this musical is sentimental, family-friendly schmaltz that entertains with ease.

BWW Reviews: Tricky New WIZARD OF OZ Storms Into the OC

During my first taste of the show last fall, I was certainly wowed by its technical wizardry and its talented cast, but was sadly underwhelmed by how much of the original film's stirring, emotional magic and innocent fantasy had been stripped away in favor of easy, high-camp laughs, dazzling onstage visual effects, and head-scratching staging choices. I think perhaps a small part of me had hoped that a few alterations have been enacted into the tour now that it has arrived an hour south in Costa Mesa months since that L.A. premiere. Alas, no.... the very same show (except for a cast change or two) is now playing at the Segerstrom Center for the Arts in Orange County through February 23.
