If John Steinbeck had been asked to create a musical, it may have looked something like this. Soundtracked by the songs of Bob Dylan, Girl From The North Country is, at heart, a bleak meditation on untimely death; not just physically due to illness, murder and suicide (though that’s here too) but also spiritually due to the death of ambition, the death of hope and, most cruelly, the death of love.
The new Dublin & UK Tour production of Girl From The North Country is opening tonight in Dublin at the 3 Olympia Theatre. Written and directed by celebrated playwright Conor McPherson with music and lyrics by Bob Dylan. The production embarks on its first UK tour in August following its opening tonight. The curtain rises at the Theatre Royal to reveal a heavily decked-out Chinese restaurant, with a sea of red lanterns hanging from polystyrene roof tiles. This is the opening of David Mamet's 1984 Pulitzer Prize-winning play Glengarry Glen Ross, which is making its Brighton stop on its current UK Tour following a sell-out run in the West End.
It is over 35 years since David Mamet's scorching critique of the male ego and the dangers of capitalism debuted at the National Theatre. Glengarry Glen Ross went on the win the Pulitzer Prize and an Olivier. In 2017, it was revived for a successful West End run, directed by Sam Yates and starring a brilliant Christian Slater. Yates' visceral, powerful and profanity-laden production is now on a nationwide tour and comes to Richmond Theatre this week.
Joining the hard-hitting sales team in Sam Yates' unmissable production of David Mamet's darkly funny classic, Glengarry Glen Ross are: Denis Conway(The Lieutenant of Inishmore) as Dave Moss; Wil Johnson (Rosencrantz & Guildenstern Are Dead) as George Aaronow; Scott Sparrow (King Lear) as John Williamson; James Staddon (Goodnight Mister Tom) as James Lingk; and Zephryn Taitte (The Jungle Book) as Baylen. They join the previously announced Mark Benton (Shelly 'The Machine' Levene) and Nigel Harman (Ricky Roma).
