22nd Annual San Diego Jewish Book Fair Presented by the San Diego Center for Jewish Culture Read Juvintation Day

San Diego's internationally recognized San Diego Jewish Book Fair celebrates its 22nd year with an intriguing mix of more than 30 leading authors in their fields including: Jennifer Weiner, Rich Cohen, Shep Gordon, Samuel M. Katz, Todd Buchholz, Dov Waxman, Daniel Oppenheimer, Nina Tassler, Peter Himmelman and Fred Kaplan. This year's lineup strikes a balance of arts and intellect, ideas and imagination, history and humor, and also will include spirited discussions about cyber wars, politics, the economy and the military. For those seeking a quiet escape from the daily grind, Read-Juvination will be a special day focusing on mind, balance and body. A complete list of authors and events can be found at www.sdjbf.org. Book Fair events will run from October 29 through November 6, and are presented by the San Diego Center for Jewish Culture at the Lawrence Family Jewish Community Center. 4126 Executive Drive, La Jolla, California 92037. General Information: For tickets visit www.sdjbf.org or call the JCC Box Office at 858-362-1348. On November 1, the San Diego Jewish Book will have a day of Read-Juvination Day the JCC. The schedule as follows: 10:00 am Yoga/Meditation with Rabbi Benjamin Shalva Spiritual Cross Training: Searching Through Silence, Stretch, and Song Rabbi and yoga instructor Ben Shalva-whose life has taken him in directions ranging from serving as Rabbinic Chaplain at the Rikers Island Correctional Facility in New York to trekking through Tibet to becoming a certified Hatha Yoga instructor-will help you improve both your physical well-being and spiritual fortitude. Meet the Rabbi, yogi, and author of Spiritual Cross Training while he shares wisdom on both the body and the soul and helps you better connect with your spiritual self. You're sure to be inspired on every level as you experience the joys of movement, meditation and song. 12:00 pm Lunch with Kate Siegel and her Crazy Jewish Mom Mother, Can You Not? You may know her better as the gal behind the @CrazyJewishMom Instagram. If not, here's the scoop: Siegel became a social media superstar simply by sharing texts she received from her mother-who, to be blunt-is the Blackhawk/Apache of helicopter moms. In Mother, Can You Not?, she makes two things clear: her mom would go to previously unseen lengths to 'enrich' her daughter's life (parties to celebrate her menstrual cycles?), and that she loves the woman completely. Join this 'insanely funny author' (New York Observer) and her just plain Crazy Jewish Mom, Kim Friedman for lunch and a reading that takes Laugh Out Loud to a whole other level of hilarity. 2:00 pm Janice Kaplan The Gratitude Diaries: How a Year Looking on the Bright Side Can Transform Your Life Has anyone ever said to you, 'Hey, look on the bright side!' Well, Janice Kaplan is someone who decided to LIVE on the bright side. Her essays on gratitude and on finding the good in whatever comes our way are enchanting and inspiring just as this reading and discussion is sure to be. The critics agree: '...loaded with solid techniques for positive thinking...her own example provides the most convincing testament to her ideas' (Publishers Weekly). 'If you liked Sheryl Sandberg's Lean In... read Janice Kaplan's The Gratitude Diaries' (Time). 4:00 p.m. Mind, Body and Balance Open House - Julie Potiker Enjoy healthy refreshments as you relax and rejuvenate in the Lawrence Family JCCs newest space called the 'Julie Potiker' for meditation, yoga and peace of mind. Browse the book store, grab a book, journal or coloring book as you sip and nosh on healthy treats. 5:00 pm Happy Hour with Mache Seibel, MD Estrogen Window: The Breakthrough Guide to Being Healthy, Energized, and Hormonally Balanced-through Peri-menopause, Menopause, and Beyond 'What every woman over 40 needs to know' is the subtitle of Dr. Seibel's book. But this is not just for women. Men, too, will benefit from learning a bit more about this sometimes taboo subject. Whether or not you or someone you love is taking or considering taking estrogen this may be one of the most important sessions you'll ever attend. Dr. Seibel, one of the nation's foremost experts on women's wellness and menopause will lead a lively, humorous and even musical session. He'll share groundbreaking research, which details the whys of taking estrogen (it can lower the risk for breast cancer, Alzheimer's, and heart disease) and the when, a.k.a., the 'estrogen window,' to optimize the benefits of using estrogen. With estrogen, timing is everything.

Join us for one or all three of these creative and culinary stars as they entertain, demonstrate and delight us with old-world Jewish classics and new-age methods. Address: Leichtag Commons - 441 Saxony Road, Encinitas, CA 92024 Sunday, November 6 10:00 am Cooking demo with Stanley Ginsberg The Rye Baker: Classic Breads from Europe and America That football-shaped, caraway-seed-studded loaf at your local supermarket? That's not rye bread. True rye bread-in the northern/eastern European tradition-is, according to author and baker Stanley Ginsburg, a world of 'flavors, textures, and baking challenges I never imaged existed.' Join us for a tasting, and discussion of The Rye Baker, which takes us on a world tour of marvelous ryes: from orange-infused Swedish Gotland Rye to near-black Westphalian Pumpernickel to Spiced Honey Rye from France's Auvergne to Old Milwaukee Rye. Sunday, November 6 11:00 am Cooking demo with Molly Yeh Molly on the Range: Recipes and Stories from an Unlikely Life on a Farm Forget everything The Office's Dwight Schrute may have shown you about life on a beet farm. In Life on the Range, classically trained musician/food blogger/former Brooklynite Molly Yeh tells you about her move from the Big Apple to the beet farm in a crackling, winsome style, all while sharing distinct recipes drawing from her Jewish/Chinese background, her childhood in Chicago, her years in New York, and the Scandinavian tastes of her new hometown near the North Dakota-Minnesota border. Meet the author for a tasting and talk. Sunday, November 6 12:00 pm Lunch with Jeffrey Yoskowitz and Liz Alpern The Gefilte Manifesto: New Recipes for Old World Jewish Foods We're delighted to welcome the co-founders of The Gefilteria-a Brooklyn restaurant that takes the often mocked and maligned Ashkenazi dish to new heights-for a tasting and talk centered on their new cookbook, The Gefilte Manifesto. The writing/cooking/pickling/entrepreneurial duo melds old-school ingredients with new-school techniques in more than 100 Ashkenazi-inspired recipes that both honor traditional Jewish tastes and while embracing contemporary culinary trends (yes, farm-to-table gefilte is a possibility). Sunday, November 6 2:00 pm A 'live planting project' with Jeff Gottesfeld The Tree in the Courtyard: Looking Through Anne Frank's Window Bring the children for a reading and event they won't soon forget (as attendees will take part in a live planting project). Outside Anne Frank's window was a 'bare chestnut tree glistening with dew,' as she described it in her diary. In this magically illustrated book-a '...noteworthy and highly recommended introduction to a difficult and significant topic' (School Library Journal)-we learn about Anne from this tree's point of view: it's there when she arrives, when she peeks from the windows, and when her family is taken away.
