Feature: An Advocate in Providing Arts For All Deb Gottesman's Passion is Awe Inspiring

If you have been following my writings over the years, you know that when someone asks me about what arts in education to go to in the DMV, The Theatre Lab School of The Dramatic Arts is the ONLY one I will recommend. For over thirty years, The Theatre Lab has been helmed by co-Founders Deb Gottesman and Buzz Mauro. Their philosophy of arts education for all makes them an organization that just keeps raising the bar for what arts education should look like across the country and the world.

BWW Review: A PEREGRINE FALLS at The Wild Project

A Peregrine Falls at The Wild Project doesn't need to travel at breakneck speed to make an impact. Clocking in at two hours/two acts/four scenes, it moseys between three locales over three years: a Texas hospital, a hospital court, and a car dealership. Along the way, it makes an unexpected avian/automotive connection, all while hatching the story of how abuse stuns and wounds a family, collectively and individually. These birds of a feather may flock together, but their suffering is subjective.

BWW Interview: Deborah Hazlett on Channeling Compassion in SWEAT at Everyman Theatre

The Baltimore debut of Lynn Nottage's gripping play, Sweat, is currently playing at the Everyman Theatre through November 25th. To get an inside look at this production, BroadwayWorld sat down with Resident Company Member Deborah Hazlett to talk about her role as Tracey in this revelatory and emotionally gripping show.

BWW Review: SWEAT at Everyman Theatre

When the world you've known your whole life starts falling apart due to forces outside of your control, are you able to roll with the punches? When the bubble you've lived in for years starts imploding upon itself due to the choices made by others, are you able to move forward with compassion and understanding? What if the impact of those choices is caused by your friend? Or even your own mother? These are the questions audience members will ask themselves when they step into the world of Reading, Pennsylvania to see Sweat at Everyman Theatre.

How The Assembly Line Ended: SWEAT at Everyman Theatre

This industrial Eden will not end well. And end badly it does, as playwright Lynn Nottage tightens the grip of the catastrophe step by slow step. We all know the historical outlines of the story enough to have a general idea what to expect: management ready to break unions to exact wage and benefits concessions, scab laborers, jobs exported abroad, plant closures, mortgage foreclosures, destitution, opioids. But Nottage renders this familiar tale powerful and surprising.

BWW Review: Thrilling and Hilarious PETER AND THE STARCATCHER at The Repertory Theatre of St. Louis

There are some St. Louis connections in this current production of PETER AND THE STARCATCHER. There's local author Ridley Pearson who, along with Dave Barry, crafted a terribly interesting and arresting 'prequel' to the story of Peter Pan with their entertaining novel Peter and the Starcatcher. The stage version of this tale, written by Rick Elice, is an equally imaginative and inspired effort that utilizes a relatively small cast, with just about everyone playing multiple roles, that takes off at a frenetic pace that captures the same qualities that distinguished the original work. I'd seen a touring version over a year ago, but this production by The St. Louis Repertory Theatre is absolutely amazing. It just seems fresher, more touching, and more joyful. I highly recommend this show, as it appeals to families with humor and heart that anyone old or young can enjoy!
