Plosive Productions to Stage Ottawa Premiere of VANYA & SONIA & MASHA & SPIKE

Plosive Productions will present the Ottawa premiere of the 2013 Broadway hit Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike by Christopher Durang. It is directed by David Whiteley and runs from May 20 to June 5 at The Gladstone Theatre. Preview performance is Thursday, May 19 and opening night for reviewers is Friday, May 20th.

The two-week run has been extended to three weeks due to the popularity of the cast and witty content of this off-kilter comedy which won multiple awards when it ran on Broadway in 2013.

This all-Ottawa, seasoned cast came together quickly because everyone was dying to work together on this play with Plosive Productions at The Gladstone. Mary Ellis (Sonia), Beverly Wolfe (Cassandra), Drew Moore (Spike), and Sarah Finn (Nina), join Plosive Production members; Chris Ralph (Vanya), Teri Loretto-Valentik (Masha) and David Whiteley who is directing.

"It's damn funny and smart and plays with the works of Anton Chekhov. But you don't need to be smart to find it funny," quips director and co-producer David Whiteley.

Vanya and his sister Sonia have frittered their lives away in their family's farmhouse, full of regret, angst and the alarmingly ambiguous prophecies of their housekeeper. Enter their sister, a self-absorbed movie star Masha and her ditsy, gorgeous boy-toy, Spike and the stage is set for an absurd weekend of hilarity and global warming. Mixing Chekhov sensibilities with modern flair, Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike is a delightful romp that critics have hailed "a sublime state of hilarity" and "a zany joy!"
