Trombonist Delfeayo Marsalis to Perform Intimate Concert at Holland Center, 4/12

Omaha Performing Arts presents trombonist Delfeayo Marsalis at the 1200 CLUB inside the Holland Performing Arts Center on Saturday, April 12, 2014, at 8:00 p.m. The performance is part of Omaha Performing Arts' 1200 CLUB 13/14 Series. The performance takes place in the intimate Scott Recital Hall. Tickets start at $30 and are available at TicketOmaha.com, 402.345.0606 or at the Ticket Omaha Office inside the Holland Center, 1200 Douglas St.

Delfeayo Marsalis was born into a musical family in New Orleans on July 28, 1965 (his older brothers are Wynton and Branford, their dad is Ellis). He began studying trombone at age 13, and attended the New Orleans Center for Creative Arts high school. He was classically trained at the Eastern Music Festival and Tanglewood Institute. In 1983, Delfeayo performed Gordon Jacob's Trombone Concerto with the New Orleans Philharmonic and received the Outstanding Performance Award from the Jefferson Performing Arts Society for his presentation of Marcello's Sonata #6.

After producing his first recording at age 17, Marsalis attended the prestigious Berklee College of Music, majoring in both performance and audio production. He has since produced more than 75 major-label recordings - several of which have received Grammy Awards® and nominations - including works by Harry Connick Jr., Marcus Roberts, Spike Lee, and Ellis, Branford and Wynton Marsalis. His production skills earned a 3M Visionary Award in 1996.

As a trombonist, Marsalis has toured internationally with Art Blakey, Abdullah Ibrahim, Elvin Jones, Slide Hampton and Max Roach, as well as touring with his own modern jazz ensemble. A mainstay on the New Orleans modern jazz scene, he has released solo albums to critical acclaim, including Pontius Pilate's Decision, Musashi and Minions Dominion and the more recent Sweet Thunder. Along with late trombone master J.J. Johnson, several music reviewers have labeled Marsalis as one of the freshest modern voices on the instrument to arrive in the '90s.

Marsalis has been involved with educating youth in various developmental programs for several years. In 1993, his original "D-Blues" was commissioned by "Meet the Composer" for the Filmore Arts Center in Washington, D.C., and in 1995 he lectured in public and parochial schools on behalf of both the Dallas Opera and the Bravo cable network. He has served as director of the Foundation for Artistic and Musical Excellence summer program in Lawrenceville, N.J., from 1998 to 2002.

The 1200 CLUB transforms the Holland Performing Arts Center's most intimate venue, the Suzanne and Walter Scott Recital Hall, into a relaxed nightclub setting where patrons can experience performances by nationally and internationally known artists in jazz, blues and comedy. While enjoying the evening's entertainment, audience members may enjoy hors d'oeuvres and cocktails served right to their candle-lit table. Zoë Keating is the next performer in the 1200 CLUB on May 2.
