BWW Review: Lyric Theatre's MILLION DOLLAR QUARTET Is A Rock-n-Roll Hit You Can Bank On BWW Review: Lyric Theatre's MILLION DOLLAR QUARTET Is A Rock-n-Roll Hit You Can Bank On
by Ronn Burton on June 28, 2017 in Oklahoma

Lyric Theatre kicks off its summer season with this rollicking concert of golden oldies - the finale medley alone is worth the price of admission, but Lyric's production serves up nearly two hours worth of your favorite songs from Elvis, Johnny Cash, Carl Perkins, Jerry Lee Lewis. Tried-and-true hits like "Blue Suede Shoes", "Great Balls Of Fire", "Fever", "Hound Dog" and many more each get their moment in the spotlight. These performers are musicians first and foremost, and it shows. Yet none of them fall into the trap of impersonations…each actor brings his character to life with a crisp vitality that keeps the show nimble and appealing. (more...)

So, as we say in show business, 'That's a Wrap!' The dizzying creative and emotional 'hangover' of what transpired in Broken Arrow and Tulsa, Oklahoma, last week, is still lingering... whether it's the students or the faculty. We have all been in constant communication, continuing to be in awe of what actually happened to ALL of us, between June 11 to 17. The work week was intense, long, and difficult, but the rewards and what we all got back, did more than make up for it. (more...)

Wraps Up It's Third Year- Volume One! BWW Exclusive: Kristin Chenoweth's Broadway Bootcamp Wraps Up It's Third Year- Volume One!
by Richard Jay-Alexander on June 20, 2017 in Oklahoma

I just returned from Kristin Chenoweth's Broadway Bootcamp, my first. How did this happen? Well, it all happened in Kristin's Dressing Room, at the Lunt-Fontanne, when we were doing MY LOVE LETTER TO BROADWAY. Her 'bootcamp' for young, aspiring performers had already had two seasons and she was looking to really 'change it up.' The rest is history, as they say, and 'I' can say, in all honesty, that it was one of the greatest experiences I have ever had and those 43 kids and a handful of young interns, are in our hearts... forever. Oklahoma Shakespeare in the Park Begins Season with Hilarious TAMING OF THE SHREW Oklahoma Shakespeare in the Park Begins Season with Hilarious TAMING OF THE SHREW
by Robert Barossi on June 19, 2017 in Oklahoma

The works of William Shakespeare can be some of the most challenging plays for any company to produce. One of the potential hurdles is whether or not to change or alter the play to make it 'more accessible' to modern audiences. Some will argue that no such changes need to ever happen because the plays are as accessible and relatable today as they have always been. Others say modern audiences need help to grasp the play's language and its meaning. Oklahoma Shakespeare in the Park is taking on these challenges in their rollicking and entertaining production of Taming of the Shrew, now playing on the stage at the Myriad Botanical Gardens. BWW Review: Pollard's BRING IT ON is Campy Fun at its Finest BWW Review: Pollard's BRING IT ON is Campy Fun at its Finest
by Robert Barossi on June 13, 2017 in Oklahoma

Often, an audience member goes into a show with a certain set of expectations in mind. If you're seeing Shakespeare, you expect sonnets and iambic pentameter. If you're seeing Arthur Miller or Tennessee Williams, you expect searing drama and representations of real, recognizable people and their very human problems. If you are seeing Bring It On: the Musical, based on the cult-favorite movie of the same name, you expect camp, fun, nothing to be taken too seriously and some excellent dance and cheerleading. All of that and more is found in the infectiously enjoyable production of Bring It On now running at the Pollard Theatre in Guthrie. (more...)

THE LION KING Tour Brings Spectacular Theatrical Magic to Civic Center THE LION KING Tour Brings Spectacular Theatrical Magic to Civic Center
by Robert Barossi on May 14, 2017 in Oklahoma

Since the dawn of theater, even in it's most nascent forms, audiences have marveled at spectacular moments brought to life on stage. Throughout their history, plays and musicals have utilized the talents of theater artists and professionals to do what may have seemed impossible. Today, modern technology makes it possible to dig even deeper into our imaginations and bring to life what's found there. Few shows have excited and fulfilled our collective imagination the way The Lion King has and the touring production currently playing at the Civic Center remains as spectacular as ever. (more...)
