FEAR AND DESIRE is the second play in a trilogy written by Free (Part One is Beginner At Life and Part Three is Black Fire/White Fire). In FEAR AND DESIRE, Eden, a new mother in Manhattan, asks "How do you trust life if you don't trust your mother?" Dealing with the micro-management of her life by her "supermom", Eden is desperately trying to reconnect with herself while battling post-partum blues. The play follows Eden's journey in a series of flashbacks - a visit to work on a kibbutz which multiplies her questions, and leads her to an Orthodox Biblical study center in Jerusalem; a family loss which brings her home and a proposal for marriage; as well as guidance on womanhood from a range of spiritual teachers including her immigrant grandmother.

FEAR AND DESIRE was given a staged reading in New York City at Julia's Reading Room, in the home of legendary producer Julia Miles in September, 2010. Publicized readings were staged in Sydney, Australia in May of 2010, and in NYC, at NOLA Studios, at the Mamapalooza Festival and the conference of The Association for Research on Motherhood in May of 2009 and 2010.

The staged public reading in Sydney led theatre critic L.B. Sykes to write, "The irrepressible, intense and prolific Alana Ruben Free has a knack for writing characters that are, at once, personal, defiantly individual, idiosyncratic and universally recognizable."
The other parts of the trilogy, BEGINNER AT LIFE, and BLACK FIRE/ WHITE FIRE have been performed in Tel Aviv, Milan, Torino, Novara, Sydney, Toronto, and New York City. Performances in New Brunswick, Canada and Istanbul, Turkey are being planned for the Fall of 2011.
