Rising Sun Performance Company Celebrates 15th Anniversary

Rising Sun Performance Company started out in a tiny coffee shop on 50th street, in 2001 with myself and two friends- David Anthony and Danielle Montezinos and a big idea. The great big "What If" - What if we created a place where we as performers were generating the work, selecting the work and casting ourselves? What if we created a place where we worked with people we loved, in a respectful and fun environment? What if when a show was over we didn't have to say goodbye to all of the fabulous creative relationships we made during this show? What if we just did this ourselves?

From there we embarked on insane ride, just the three of us, selecting two works and grabbing a bunch of friends. We quickly learned on the fly all of the little things that had to be done to produce a show. We worked overnight,watched the sunrise, went to our day jobs and then back to the theatre. We literally swapped out of the light booth during scenes so each other could be on stage. We quickly sold out our first show, and then our second and then the whole run. On closing night we had a company of actors standing before us saying "this was amazing, whats next?" And a Company was born. Over 100 Productions and 600+ Artists later, we celebrate a milestone that I'm deeply proud of.

About Us

Rising Sun Performance Company is a vital part of the Off-Off Broadway landscape; being one of the longest running ensemble companies at our producing level in NYC. Founded in September of 2001, RISING SUN PERFORMANCE COMPANY (RSP) is dedicated to producing ensemble-based work. It is run by artists for artists to allow them to create their own opportunities instead of their opportunities creating them. RSP is the full time artistic home for a wide range of theatre artists, including actors, writers, directors, designers, singers, and dancers.

2016 marks the beginning of RSP's 15th producing season, culminating in 100 plus productions and events. This includes the development of countless NYC and World debut plays, over 70 One Act Plays as part our annual series, 3 musical cabaret series, free outdoor performances, children's theatre, immersive themed theatrical experiences and its trademark revivals, including sold out critically acclaimed hits: Goodnight Lovin' Trail, The Shape of Things, An Adult Evening of Shel Silverstein, Hellcab The Last Supper, Fool For Love, Bug and Brilliant Traces. RSP has been Artist in Residence at Horse TRADE Theater Group, The Field's Far Space, Hosteling International and Space on White.

RSP has received 7 New York Innovative Theatre Award Nominations, 20+ PCTF Nominations and 7 Awards from Planet Connections Theatre Festivity and is a 5 time FRIGID NY Festival Award Winner.
