Rising Circle Theater Collective Present sWorkshop of Matthew Paul Olmos' NOBODY RIDES A LOCOMOTIVE NO'MO' Today

Rising Circle Theater Collective kicks off its 2013-14 Season with The Refinery today, a workshop production of Matthew Paul Olmos' new play 'nobody rides a locomotive no'mo', directed by Mariana Carreno King. The cast includes Dacyl Acevedo (Will work for Food), Bernardo Cubria (so go the ghosts of mexico), Heather Velazquez (Pinkolandia).

Olmos is the 2012-13 Princess Grace Fellow in Playwriting, 2012-13 Sundance Institute UCROSS Playwright, 2013-14 Dramatists Guild Fellow; 2012-13 New York Theatre Workshop Fellow, and was selected by Sam Shepard as the inaugural recipient of La Mama E.T.C.'s Ellen Stewart Emerging Artist Award. He is also a Primary Stages Dorothy Strelsin New American Writer's Group playwright, Ensemble Studio Theatre Lifetime Member and was a two-time Resident Artist at Mabou Mines/ Suite, Rising Circle Collective playwright, Brooklyn Arts Exchange Resident Artist, 2009's Sundance Institute Time Warner Storytelling Fellow and in 2011 was awarded the "Top prize for the Americas" by the BBC's International Playwriting Competition. In April 2013, La Mama E.T.C. world-premiered the first play of his SO GO THE GHOSTS OF MÉXICO cycle (developed in Rising Circle's INKtank program), where it was a New York Times Critics Pick. It will be published by both NoPassport Press and Samuel French and will be produced in San Miguel de Allende, México in November 2013 and in México City in January 2014. He is currently developing the second and third plays in his SO GO THE GHOSTS OF MÉXICO cycle, developing a new work about American nationalism entitled THE DRINKING OF AN UN'HAPPY PEOPLE as well as a new piece entitled THE OLMOS FAMILY PLAY. Mariana's directing credits include Light of Night, by Cecilia Copeland (Iati Theatre), American Jornalero, by Ed Cardona and Mala Hierba, by Tanya Saracho (Intar Theatre), The Purification, The Municipal Abattoir and Mr. Paradise, by Tennessee Williams (Cherry Pit and The Red Room), Welcome to the Funhouse, Pilgrim and Dinner with Jobita and la Chacha by Henry Guzmán (Puerto Rican Traveling Theatre) and The Cook, by Eduardo Machado (Bilingual production, Stages Repertory Theatre, Houston, TX), among others. Mariana has also directed several readings and workshop productions with LAByrinth Theatre Company, New York University Tisch School of the Arts, The Lark, The 24 Hour Plays, The A Train Plays, Urban Artists and the 52nd Street Project. Mariana is also a writer and a translator.

Rising Circle's upcoming season will include:

INKtank - an intensive 12-week playwrighting residency for new play developments starting January 2014. Award winning playwright Migdalia Cruz, and Rising Circle co-founder Deepa Purohit will be the 2014 INKtank moderators. Playwrights can apply for INKtank directly through the company website.

PlayRISE - A festival of Staged readings of the plays developed by INKtank participants in May 2014.

The Refinery - A Workshop Production of a new play by an INKtank Alum. Tickets now on sale for Olmos' play.

QUp - Rising Circle's education component focused towards empowerment and self expression for teenage girls through Theatre and Movement. (Winter 2014)

In addition, this year the Collective is introducing Spectrum Series - A salon of 4 community events through the year, to expand this home for artists of color with panel discussions, socials and events, bringing together NY theatre companies, writers, directors and actors to create new work in a condensed period of time. The first of this Series will be Rising Circle's holiday event on December 9.

Founded in 2000, Rod Bowen and Deepa Purohit, both artists of color and educators, created Rising Circle Theater Collective to address the lack of stories and roles on stage that represent the diverse cultural communities in New York City. Now in its 13th year, Rising Circle Theater Collective is a not-for-profit arts organization dedicated to broadening the scope of storytelling on the American stage by providing a home for artists of color that empowers them to seek out unheard stories of people of color, thereby inspiring the creation of theater that challenges cultural misperceptions in an effort to bridge social divides.
