The Gallery at Access Theater will host the World Premiere of THE WIFE by Tommy Smith. Equal parts black comedy and psychological drama, it is directed by May Adrales (Thomas Bradshaw's The Bereaved -- Time Out NY Critics Pick, Top 10 of 2009). Previews begin December 2 with opening night slated for December 5.

THE WIFE follows a young Hasidic woman who befriends her gentrifying neighbors - and what starts as an innocent relationship quickly spirals into a series of events that unravel their entire urban community. THE WIFE is a darkly comic take on the tragedy of culture.

The production stars Caitlin McDonough-Thayer (Richard Foreman's Deep Trace Behavoir..., Panic: How To Be Happy & Zomboid, Film Project #1), Noel Joseph Allain (Sa Ka La, Richard Foreman's Now That Communism is Dead...), Travis Allen, Jakob Knoll, Mary Jane Gibson, and Ayesha Ngaujah (Angela's Mixtape). Produced by Dorit Avganim and Amanda Feldman, the production team includes Ji-Youn Chang (sets), Becky Bodurtha (costumes), and Gina Scherr (lighting) and Barbara Harrison (Assistant Director).

Tommy Smith's plays include White Hot (HERE Arts Center; May Adrales, director), PTSD (Ensemble Studio Theatre), The Break-Up (The Flea Theater), Sextet (Washington Ensemble Theatre), and Air Conditioning (Eugene O'Neill Playwrights Conference), among others.. His work has also appeared at PS 122, The Ontological Theatre, Portland Center Stage, Soho Rep Writer/Director Lab, and Yale Cabaret; internationally, he has been produced in Prague, Edinburgh, Amsterdam, Montreal and Athens. He is the 2010-11 PONY fellow at The Lark, a two-time winner of the Lecomte du Nouy Prize, a two-time winner of the MAP Fund Award, a recipient of the E.S.T. Sloan Grant, a winner of the Page73 Productions Playwriting Fellowship and a recipient of the Creative Capital Award. He is a graduate of the playwriting program at Juilliard.
