Photo Flash: Carson Kressley Visits 'SEX TIPS', Welcomes Grant MacDermott, Rachel Moulton, and BJ Gruber to the Cast
Sex Tips for Straight Women from a Gay Man, a new comedy written by Matt Murphy, based on the best-selling book by Dan Anderson and Maggie Berman, is now in its fourth smash month Off-Broadway at The 777 Theatre (777 Eighth Avenue, between 47th and 48th Streets). Directed by Tim Drucker (writer/director of Spidermusical, co-book writer for the musical Fat Camp) Sex Tips for Straight Women from a Gay Man now stars Grant MacDermott as Dan, Rachel Moulton as Robyn, and BJ Gruber as Stefan.
Carson Kressley dropped by the show late last week just in time to say good bye to the comedy's original cast members and to welcome new cast members Grant MacDermott, Rachel Moulton, and BJ Gruber (who begin on Thursday, May 1). Both SEX TIPS -- the book on which the comedy is based -- and Kressley are pioneers in the field of "better living through gay advice." Scroll down for photos from Kressley's visit!
Sex Tips for Straight Women from a Gay Man is set inside a local university auditorium, where the featured event is an interactive discussion with the author of the book Sex Tips for Straight Women from a Gay Man. With the help of Stefan, a hunky stage assistant, author Dan Anderson encourages the shy and studious moderator of the event, Robyn, to follow her dreams while following his tips. Based on the international best-selling book, this world premiere production welcomes audiences into a fun-filled world of foolproof moves and insider advice that could only be culled from that most insightful of individuals: the gay man.
Sex Tips for Straight Women from a Gay Man was written by Dan Anderson and Maggie Berman. First published in 1997 -- before TV shows and films such as "Will and Grace," "Sex and the City" and My Best Friend's Wedding reflected the straight girl/gay guy friendship in mainstream pop culture; and years before the "Queer Eye" guys introduced the world to the notion of better living through gay advice -- the book instantly became a national best-seller. Sex Tips for Straight Women from a Gay Man was praised by The Daily News for "offering witty-and yes, explicit-descriptions of all manner of how-to's;" by The New York Post as "straightforward and saucy . . . a play-by-play account of how to make the most of every moment;" and by Salon.com as "a cannily entertaining romp through the nuts and bolts of sex from the male perspective." Now a cult classic, it has also been published in Germany, Japan, Taiwan, Brazil, the Netherlands, Australia and England, and will come out in France this spring. Recently, the book also played a supporting role in the movie Hope Springs by sparking passionate romance between the characters played by Meryl Streep and Tommy Lee Jones.
Presented by Matt Murphy and Shawn Nightingale, Sex Tips for Straight Women from a Gay Man has scenic design by Luke Cantarella, costume design by Tilly Grimes, lighting design by Brian Tovar, and video and sound design by Randy Blair.
