During the month of June, New York City experienced a groundbreaking theatrical event. Woodie King, Jr.'s New Federal Theatre, in association with the Castillo Theatre on West 42nd Street and Harlem's National Black Theatre on 125th Street,  present 25 plays by the greatest Black playwrights of all time. They are the pioneers of the Black Theatre Movement from the 1960s and up until the beginning of the new century, as well as those who are carrying on the work of giving dramatic expression to the Black experience.

A truly unparalleled presentation of great theatre by great playwrights including: Lynn Nottage, Suzan Lori Parks, Alice Childress, Ed Bullins, James Baldwin, Amiri Baraka, Wesley Brown, Pearl Cleage, Philip Hayes Dean, Lonne Elder, J.E. Franklin, P.J. Gibson, Charles Gordone, James de Jongh, Adam Kennedy, Adrienne Kennedy, Bill Harris, Lawrence Holder, Mustafa Matura, Ron Milner, Alexander Simmons, Richard Wesley, Talvin Wilks and Ntozake Shange.

Great Black Plays & Playwrights is being performed at the Castillo Theatre on June 4, 5, 11, 12, 18, 19, 25 & 26. Shows are Fridays at 7:30 p.m. and Saturdays at 2:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m. The Castillo Theatre is located at 543 West 42nd Street (between 10th and 11th Avenues). Tickets are $10.
