Multimedia Adaptation Of HUSBANDS Comes To SVA 5/19-5/22

The Department of Film, Video and Animation at The School of Visual Arts in conjunction with Dangerous Ground Productions and with the cooperation of Gena Rowlands and Faces Music, Inc, proudly presents a multimedia adaptation of John Cassavetes' HUSBANDS, conceived, designed and directed by Doris Mirescu. The production's producer and technical supervisor is Chris Newman. The play begins performances Tuesday, May 19th at 7:30PM at the SVA Theatre (333 W. 23rd Street, and will play through Friday, May 22nd, the show will play performances Tuesday-Friday @ 7:30PM. Tickets for all shows are $10 General and $5 for students and seniors.

HUSBANDS, is based on the screenplay of the 1970 film written and directed by John Cassavetes. The Ensemble piece, which describes three middle class men in the throes of a midlife crisis, starred actors Ben Gazzara, Peter Falk and Cassavetes, at the time, it was described by Time magazine as Cassevetes' finest work.

The late John Cassavetes said about filmmaking, "The most difficult thing in the world is to reveal yourself, to express what you have to. As an artist, I feel that we must try many things - but above all, we must dare to fail. You must be willing to risk everything to really express it all."

Director Doris Mirescu sums up the work with, "They laugh. They cannot cry. The pain is hidden deep inside. It's intimate. It is in the heart, in the silence of empty hallways when they look at each other and cannot say. Life happens. They fall. They stand back up. They run. They drink. They smoke. The toys are lying around. It is raining outside.

The cast for this production of HUSBANDS includes Jaime Andrews, Audri Augenbraum, Kira Davies, Patrick Flynn, Gayle Greene, Ed Herrera, Roxie Kratt, Anthony Laforgia, Francis Oberle, Florin Penisoara, Pedro Rafael Rodriguez, Rukiye Sahin, Abraham Zalta. Many of the cast also appeared in last year's SVA production of Beware of A Holy Whore, also at the SVA Theater.

DORIS MIRESCU (Director) is a Romanian born freelance director and writer, and the founder of New York-based theatre company Dangerous Ground Productions. Her most recent productions include her adaptation of Fassbinder's Beware of A Holy Whore at the SVA Theater, Madness of Day by Maurice Blanchot and Neil LaBute's The Distance from Here, both at Tom Noonan's Paradise Factory in New York. She directed the American Premiere of Paul Solomon's Aching To Go Home at the Epic Center Theatre (Kalamazoo, Michigan) and Battle of Black and Dogs by Bernard-Marie Koltès as part of Koltès New York 2003, a festival which she also produced (Ohio Theater, New York). Additional credits include Story of Rats, her adaptation of works by French writer Georges Bataille (Chashama, New York) and the European Premiere of Les Nuits Sans Lune by French playwright Véronique Olmi (Parc de La Villette, Paris). New York credits include Silence of Snow (Soho Rep), Seneca's Trojan Women, Cocteau's The Handsome Hunk and Juliet Montage, a one-woman show based on Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet (all at the Shapiro Theatre). Ms. Mirescu is a four-time recipient of Etant Donnés, the French-American Fund for the Performing Arts. She holds a Summa Cum Laude Master of Arts in French Literature from Paris-IV Sorbonne as well as an MFA in Theatre Directing from Columbia University. She is an alumna of the Lincoln Center Theatre Directors Lab. She is at present teaching advanced acting and directing at The School of Visual Arts. Ms. Mirescu is currently working on Wild, a multimedia homage to Jack Garfein's Something Wild which will perform at PS122 as part of the Underground Zero Festival in July as well as on a stage adaptation of François Truffaut's The Woman Next Door.

Chris NewMAN (Producer and Technical Supervisor) collaborated with Doris Mirescu on Beware of A Holy Whore, as well as Madness of Day and The Distance from Here. and is credited in over eighty films as a production sound mixer. Some of those films include the highly acclaimed Tender Mercies, The World According to Garp, Philadelphia, Sophie's Choice, and Klute. He has been nominated for eight Academy Awards, including his work on The Godfather, The French Connection, Chorus Line, Fame and Silence of the Lambs. Mr. Newman has won three Oscars for his contributions to the groundbreaking films, The Exorcist, Amadeus, and The English Patient.
