Immediate Medium Presents DOESN'T EVERYBODY DO IT IN PARIS? 6/9-26

Immediate Medium presents the World Premiere of Doesn't Everybody Do It In Paris?, a multi-media dance theater piece inspired by Flaubert's Madame Bovary, from June 9-26, 2010 at the IRT, 154 Christopher Street #3B, NYC. Doesn't Everybody Do It In Paris? expands upon Flaubert's classic Madame Bovary, a tale of Emma Bovary's attempts to reconcile her simple life as a country doctor's wife with her idealized notions of romance and glamour. Emma's journey to escape her life through financial extravagance and sexual indulgence results in catastrophe. Doesn't Everybody Do It In Paris?takes the story further by adding another layer in the form of Eleanor Marx Aveling, the first English translator of Madame Bovary. The daughter of Karl Marx and an idealist whose life ended in suicide, the translator's story serves as an echo of themes explored in Emma Bovary's fictional world. The fusion of these two women's lives brings to the stage the question of what happens when human ambitions and idealized notions are interrupted by reality.

Doesn't Everybody Do It In Paris? uses live and recorded music and text, video, and choreography with untrained dancers, to examine, in a non-narrative style, the intersections in the stories of Bovary and Marx Aveling. The use of untrained dancers spotlights the thematic considerations of aspiration and failure within the piece and questions the traditional role of dance as an amusement for the elite.

Doesn't Everybody Do It In Paris? is directed and choreographed by Liz Vacco. Production design by J.J. Lind, Artistic Director of Immediate Medium; video and sound by Nathan Lemoine; and costume design by Maki Takenouchi.

The production features James Allerdyce as Edward Aveling, Max Dana as Léon Rodolphe, Brady Jenkins as Charles Bovary, Nathan Lemoine as Monsieur Lheureux, Nadège Néchadi as Eva Frye, Maki Takenouchi as Emma Bovary, and Siobhan Towey as Eleanor Marx.

Immediate Medium, Inc. (IM) is a non-profit performance collaborative founded in 2002 dedicated to building a community of artists through the creation of original works of art utilizing live performance and multimedia. The company seeks to challenge formal distinctions between performance, dance, film, sculpture and architecture in order to create new works of experiential art that engage artists and audiences in a shared emotional, artistic and intellectual journey. The company favors asking challenging questions over offering easy answers and does not hold easy allegiance to any given genre, with works that span performance art, dance, fine art and theater. IM is comprised of artists with diverse ethnic, economic and geographic backgrounds, each working in varied artistic disciplines. Since the company's inception, the members have endeavored to create collaborative works of art that draw upon these diverse backgrounds. IM has presented work at venues including the Knitting Factory, the Collapsable Hole, P.S. 122's Avant-Gard-Arama, HERE's Living Room Festival, the Tank, chashama, the Gershwin Hotel, IRT and Clemente Soto Velez.

Liz Vacco (Director / Choreographer) is a Brooklyn-based performer and choreographer. For the past ten years, she has been active in the New York theater and dance communities, performing and creating with Les Freres Corbusier, The Collapsable Giraffe, Fovea Floods, Gold No Trade, The White Horse Theater, Sidra Bell NY and at St. Ann's Warehouse, P.S. 122, Lincoln Center's Clark Studio Theater and the Hangar Theater. Liz is a founding member and the Managing Director of IM. She has contributed to all IM works since 2002 as a collaborator, choreographer and performer. Additionally, she teaches dance, theater and yoga to young children through the New York City Ballet's Ballet Bridges and Ballet Tales Programs, at Discovery Programs and at Let's Dance Brooklyn. She has choreographed for student productions at the Browning School and the Imagine Project. She also worked for the non-profit organization, The Children's Aid Society, implementing and expanding the after-school theater program at P.S. 5. She received a BA in Theatre Studies from Yale, where she served as Co-President of Yaledancers.
