Boy Meets Girl in VIETGONE, Starting Tomorrow at Manhattan Theatre Club

A friendly reminder! Performances begin tomorrow, Tuesday, October 4 for Manhattan Theatre Club's New York premiere of Vietgone, the new play by Qui Nguyen (She Kills Monsters), directed by May Adrales (Luce).

The limited engagement opens Tuesday, October 25 at MTC at New York City Center - Stage I (131 West 55th Street).

The cast of Vietgone features Jon Hoche (national tour of War Horse, The Inexplicable Redemption of Agent G), Jennifer Ikeda (Top Girls at MTC, Seascape), Raymond Lee (Farah Goes Bang, founding member of Four Clowns clown troupe), Samantha Quan (4 Wedding Planners, "NCIS"), and Paco Tolson (Peter and the Starcatcher at South Coast Rep, Ensemble Studio Theatre member).

A modern twist on the All-American love story, Qui Nguyen's new play Vietgone pulses with contemporary energy. It's the classic story of boy meets girl - except this boy and girl are refugees from the Vietnam War newly settled in a relocation camp inside Middle America. Borrowing elements from the world of up-to-the-minute popular culture to recreate the playwright's own parents' meeting, Vietgoneranges from hilarity to heart-wrenching drama. Nguyen and director May Adrales skip through time and around the globe to present a fresh theatrical take on a moving account of one real family's history.

Vietgone is produced in association with South Coast Repertory. Vietgone was originally commissioned and developed by South Coast Repertory as part of SCR CrossRoads, with funding from the Time Warner Foundation. It is a recipient of The Edgerton Foundation New American Play Award.

The creative team for Vietgone features Tim Mackabee (scenic design), Anthony Tran (costume design), Justin Townsend (lighting design), Shane Rettig (original music and sound design), and Jared Mezzocchi (projection design).

ABOUT THE ARTISTS:

Qui Nguyen (Playwright), often credited as a pioneer of "geek theatre," is a playwright, television writer, and co-founder of the Obei Award-winning Vampire Cowboys Theatre Company of New York City. His plays include Vietgone (premiered October 2016 at South Coast Repertory with upcoming productions at Oregon Shakespeare Festival in April 2016 and Manhattan Theatre Club in October 2016); War is F**king Awesome (developed by Sundance Theatre Institute, Frederick Loewe Award); She Kills Monsters (The Flea, Buzz22 Chicago/Steppenwolf, Company One, 2014 AATE Distinguished Play Award, 2012 GLAAD Media Award nomination); Krunk Fu Battle Battle (East West Players); Bike Wreck (Ensemble Studio Theatre); Soul Samurai (2009 GLAAD Media Award nomination), The Inexplicable Redemption of Agent G (Ma-Yi Theater & Vampire Cowboys); and the critically acclaimed Vampire Cowboys productions of Alice in Slasherland, Fight Girl Battle World, Men of Steel, and Living Dead in Denmark. Jon Hoche (Asian Guy/American Guy/Nhan/Khue) is the Artistic Associate of Vampire Cowboys Theater Company, the creators of the genre "Geek Theater." The New York Times has said Hoche "slyly interprets multiple comic roles with precision." NYTheatre.com inducted him into their Hall of Fame in 2011. He was in the World Premiere of Vietgone at South Coast Repertory. Jon has toured all of North America and Japan with the Tony Award-winning Broadway show, War Horse, as a puppeteer and the show's puppet captain. Recently, he helped launch the inaugural season of Tantrum Theater, puppeteering Audrey 2 in Little Shop of Horrors. Jon was selected to take part in the first diversity puppetry workshop at The Jim Henson Company in 2015. Vietgone marks ten years of collaboration with playwright Qui Nguyen and his fifth Off-Broadway premiere of a new American play. He has developed work extensively with EST's Youngblood, Ma-Yi Theatre Company and Ma-Yi Writer's Lab, Center Theatre Group, New Dramatists, and South Coast Rep among others.
