Australian Made Entertainment Brings THE CLUB to Urban Stages Tonight

AUSTRALIAN MADE ENTERTAINMENT has announced their production of The Club, written by David Williamson (Winner of the Australian Writer's Guild Award for Best Play) and directed by Andrew H. Lyons.

The Club will play a three week limited engagement tonight, September 12 through Sunday, September 27, 2014 at Urban Stages (259 W. 30th Street, Manhattan). After three successful seasons in New York City, Australian Made Entertainment will be taking its unique brand of Aussie theatrics to the West Coast, but not before making one final splash in the Big Apple. For their final New York production, Australian Made Entertainment is very excited to present a cultural classic by Australia's most successful playwright. Winner of the Australian Writer's Guild award for Best Play, David Williamson's engaging satire The Club shines a harsh light on the questionable influence big business has on sports. With universal characters and recognizable situations, you don't need to know anything about football to enjoy witnessing the antics at this club, where back-stabbing and double-dealing are the order of the day.

In the innocuous boardroom of an Australian Rules football club, corruption and greed reign supreme. The Club, an Australian cultural classic debating teamwork and greed, is about a team that hasn't won a game all season, despite forking out a small fortune to acquire a star player who couldn't care less about football. The coach wants to quit, the players threaten to strike, and the club president is embroiled in scandal. But the club's devious administrator, in cahoots with a former player and coach, would dispense with them all if it meant the team had a shot at the championship.

DAVID WILLIAMSON (Playwright) his first full-length play, The Coming of Stork, later became the film Stork, directed by Tim Burstall. In 1972 his play The Removalists won the Australian Writers? Guild AWGIE Award for best stage play and the British production saw Williamson nominated most promising playwright by the London Evening Standard, and the play was a co winner of the coveted George Devine Award, the first time it had been given to a non U.K. writer. Williamson is widely recognised as Australia?s most successful playwright and over the last thirty years his plays have been performed throughout Australia and produced in Britain, United States, Canada and many European and Asian countries. His play Travelling North had a successful production in Vietnam and The Club ran for a year in Beijing. A number of his stage works have been adapted for the screen, including The Removalists, Don?s Party, The Club. Travelling North. Emerald City, Sanctuary and Brilliant Lies, and six of them have been made into quality Telemovies in Poland. David Williamson has won the Australian Film Institute film script award five times, for Petersen, Don?s Party, Gallipoli, Travelling North and Balibo and has won twelve Australian Writers? Guild AWGIE Awards. He also wrote the screenplay for Pharlap, The Year of Living Dangerously, receiving a nomination for best screenplay from the Writer?s Guild of America. He wrote the screenplay for Showtime?s On the Beach which won the Australian AFI award for best miniseries and was nominated for a Golden Globe. He also wrote the screenplay for the HBO miniseries A Dangerous Life, which made the critics top ten list of the year in both New York and Los Angeles. Altogether he has written twelve screenplays and five miniseries.

Australian Made Entertainment is an independent arts organization dedicated to bringing Australian works to the United States. The aim of Australian Made Entertainment is to produce theatre and film with a distinctly Australian flavor, whether it explores aspects of Australian culture or simply showcases the rich talents of Australian artists. In addition to producing classic works from established playwrights, we hope to introduce American audiences to emerging Australian writers, as well as provide opportunities for Australian performers, directors and other entertainment professionals.
