30 DAYS OF NYMF: Day 18- The Groove Factory
Tomorrow at this time, we will be 2 hours until places for opening night. The past 4 months have been some of the most thrilling, the most terrifying and the most gratifying of my life. For the past 10 years, David and I have spent countless hours brainstorming, writing and rewriting (and rewriting) drafts and imagining our story come to life. Over the past month as we have gone from read through to blocking/choreography to full runs of the production, we have been amazed by the talent of our cast and how accurately they portray, and very often make better, our vision. The Groove Factory began as a story about one night and one club, but it has evolved into so much more than that. It’s a story about innocence and decadence. About growing up. About family. About fun. And most importantly about music.
During one of our tech rehearsals, I looked around at the 30 plus people who we feverishly running around building sets, testing sound cues, running dance sequences. I was filled with pride just knowing that they were all there for one common purpose- to make our show come off the paper and onto the stage.
I have been in love with the theater process for 30 years. I am always backstage, not in the audience, when places are called. This time I will be front and center watching The Groove family bring our characters to life. Anticipating the feelings I will get sitting at St. Clements watching an audience watch the Groove Factory for the first time is near impossible. I guess I’ll just have to take a deep breath and let the work speak for itself.
