TheatreLAB will present Riding the Bull, by August Schulenburg, in association with Henley Street Theatre, as part of the 2013 Acts of Faith Festival.

Riding the Bull takes place in sleepy Godsburg, Texas, where a love-connection between fat Lyza, a loud-mouthed, hell-raising cattle rancher, and skinny GL, a simple-minded, God-fearing, rodeo clown, brings unexpected wealth to the previously down-and-out couple. But as GL & Lyza soon discover, money can't buy everything, and sometimes we only realize what matters most after we've lost it all. As crass as it is charming, this quirky morality play mixes ribaldry and irreverence with the deeper themes of love, faith, and the transformation that comes when we meet God face to face. The two-person cast features Maggie Bavolack as Lyza and Deejay Gray as GL, and will be directed by Sarah Roquemore. Riding the Bull is independently produced by Maggie Roop and Matt Shofner of the Ghost Light After Party.

From Sarah Roquemore, director of Riding the Bull: "This project has been one I have wanted to do ever since I first read the script in 2009 as a dramaturge for a production of Riding the Bull in that year's DC Fringe Festival. I was blown away by the genuine, vulnerable, and hilarious characters August had created in Lyza and GL and the depth of human truth and emotion he'd uncovered through their story. I pocketed the script as one of those 'someday, I'll direct this play' dream projects that young directors have, but I also knew that I needed the right avenue for this work to be successful. So, when I moved home to Richmond last year, began working with TheatreLAB, and learned about the Acts of Faith Festival, I brought the script to Deejay, Annie, Matt, and Maggie and said 'we need to do this.' And now, here we are. Needless to say, I cannot wait for Acts of Faith audiences to experience this show, and am thrilled to have the talents of actors Maggie Bavolack and Deejay Gray to bring this fantastic script to life in Richmond. "

James Ricks, Artistic Director of Henley Street Theatre says, "We are so happy to be partnering with our good friends at TheatreLAB during this festival. We are huge fans of their creative and unique style of theatre and look forward to working with them again on larger future projects."
