Contemporary Dance Wonder Martha Graham Dance Company to Appear in the Intimate Alden Theatre

McLean, Va.-The Alden in McLean will start this fall's series of international touring artists at 8 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 24, with Martha Graham Dance Company. Tickets are $35 to $50. The theatre is located inside the McLean Community Center at 1234 Ingleside Ave., inside the Beltway and minutes from the GW Parkway and Tysons. Parking is free and abundant.

Martha Graham has had a deep and lasting impact on American art and culture. She single-handedly defined contemporary dance as a uniquely American art form, which the nation has in turn shared with the world. Crossing artistic boundaries, she collaborated with and commissioned work from the leading visual artists, musicians and designers of her day, and in 1998 was named "Dancer of the Century" by Time Magazine.

Martha Graham Dance Company has been innovating the world of contemporary dance since 1924, and this program will combine original Graham work with newly commissioned pieces. Graham's "Diversion of Angels," "Errand into the Maze" and "Dark Meadow Suite" will be paired with Pontus Lidberg's "Woodland," which received its world premiere this past April.

The program also includes "Lamentation Variations" inspired by Graham's original work "Lamentations" and commissioned to commemorate the tragedies on 9/11. Choreographers Aszure Barton (Broadway revival production of "The Threepenny Opera"), Liz Gerring ("mix of purity and athleticism [that] is strong, clean, bold and exciting" -The New York Times) and Sonya Tayeh (Emmy Award nominee for "So You Think You Can Dance") each created a movement in reaction to the Graham film for the current company of Graham dancers.
