NEW BRITAIN YOUTH THEATER ANNOUNCES CLASSES, HOMESCHOOL PROGRAMS, AND AUDITIONS IN NEW PERFORMANCE SPACE
New Britain Youth Theater continues its seventh season in a new space with new classes, homeschool programs, and auditions for children and teens beginning in January.
Theater classes in acting (ages 6-12) and improv (ages 10-18) begin on Saturday, January 7. Each eight-week class term ends with a short performance open to family and friends. Programs for homeschoolers begin on Tuesday, January 24, and include a performance program for ages 6 through 12, and classes in music (ages 8-16) and improv (ages 8-16).
The classes and homeschool programs will be held at the New Britain-Berlin YMCA Program Center at 362 Main Street in the Kensington Center of Berlin. “Just coming from the New Britain YMCA building, we’re happy to be continuing our relationship with the YMCA in this new location,” said NBYT Executive and Artistic Director Darren Farrington. He added that “school programs and some performances will continue in New Britain, and we’ll always have a presence there and throughout Greater New Britain.”
Also at the Kensington location, NBYT will hold auditions for young aspiring actors ages 6 through 9 for Peter Rabbit Is Lost! Auditions will be on Tuesday, January 10, and Thursday, January 12, beginning at 6:00 p.m. each day. Peter Rabbit Is Lost! is an original adaptation based on characters in Beatrix Potter children’s books including The Tale of Peter Rabbit, The Tale of Benjamin Bunny, The Tale of Jemima Puddle-Duck, and others.
In New Britain at Holmes Elementary School, the theater will hold auditions for children ages 8 through 14 for Mark Twain’s The Prince and the Pauper on Monday, January 23, and Wednesday, January 25, beginning at 6:00 p.m. both days. The school is located at 2150 Stanley Street in New Britain (off Hartford Road (Route71) near West Farms Mall)). The Prince and the Pauper is a theatrical version of the Mark Twain novel which takes place in the attic of Twain’s home. When a group of neighborhood girls and boys visit Twain, he narrates and passes out parts, and the children act out the story of an English prince who changes places with a peasant.
For both productions, boys and girls of all levels of experience are welcome, and auditions are open to children from any town. No audition preparation is necessary, but those auditioning will meet as a group with the directors, will play some introductory drama games, and will be asked to take direction and read or repeat lines from the play. Founded in 2010, New Britain Youth Theater is a professionally-run community and educational theater for children and teens in Connecticut.
