Auditions

Feb. 12, 6-9 pm

Feb. 13, 10 am – 1 pm

Director: Sandi Belcher
Producer: Mike Conner
Music Director: Kathy Melton
Choreographer: Liz Leone

Details:

You do not need to attend both days, just pick the one most convenient for you. Please arrive on time and plan to be there the whole 3 hours.

Please prepare 16 bars of a song you know well enough to perform. Bring sheet music. An accompanist will be available to play. We want to see personality, stage presence, and emotion.

You will be taught a piece of a song from the show and asked to sing it.

You will be taught a short choreographed routine, so dress comfortably and wear appropriate shoes.

Cold readings will be done from the script.

SHOW DATES: May 6-8 & 13-15, 2016

Characters:

Sam Wheat: Aged 25-35. Tenor. Handsome, passionate, sincere. Has a hopeful and promising future. In love with Molly. Sings rock style and sings some in falsetto.

Molly Jensen: Aged 25-35. Mezzo. Pretty, warm, caring, self-assured, an optimist. She deeply loves Sam. Mostly ballads, ability to show deep emotion and grief.

Carl Bruner: Aged 25-35. Baritone. Sam’s best friend. Wants what Sam has (including Molly). Gets in way over his head and becomes desperate and frightened. Not a cardboard villain. Needs to show some vulnerability.

Oda Mae Brown: Aged 25-50. Mezzo. Belting, gospel style. African American woman. She is a medium with a rap sheet. Bigger than life personality with a comic flare and big, soulful vocals.

Willie Lopez: Aged 25-40. Non-singing role. Hispanic man. Petty criminal. He has lived a hard life. Troubled, tough, heartless. No conscience.

Hospital Ghost: Aged 50-70+. Sings a solo. Grandfatherly type. Helpful, compassionate, warm.

Subway Ghost: Aged 25-40. Raps during his solo. Extremely angry, crazed. Over the top. Frightening and not at all funny. Needs to have some vocal and physical dexterity.

Clara/Louise: Aged 25-50. Mezzo, belting, gospel style. Oda Mae’s sisters. Primarily function as back-up singers to Oda Mae. Comedic timing a plus.

Ensemble: (need about 15 people) All Ages. Play a variety of roles including Sam’s Assistant, a minister, Oda Mae’s clients, various ghosts, bank officials, nuns, police officers, city people, bystanders, etc. Need strong singers and dancers (NOTE: we are not requiring trained dancers, just people who can learn simple choreography and move well).
