Sadako Sasaki was a 2 year old when the atomic bomb was dropped on the small city of Hiroshima, where she lived. Ten years later, she was diagnosed with “radiation sickness.” A Thousand Cranes tells the true and poignant story of her battle and the tradition of folding origami cranes: If a sick person folds a thousand cranes, the Gods will grant her a wish and make her healthy.

Her wish is engraved on the base of the statue: This is our cry, this is our prayer, peace in the world.
