After pushing audiences to the edge of their seats with raw
acting and bold storytelling for four seasons (BLACK BIRD, ORANGE FLOWER
WATER, THE ADVENTURES OF BUTT BOY AND TIGGER), The Elm Theatre Presents
its 5th Season opener at Mid City Theatre:
*Sam Shepard’s* award winning play, *A LIE OF THE MIND*

"A LIE OF THE MIND" is the winner of the New York Drama Critics Circle Award, the Outer Critics Circle Award and the Drama Desk Award. It is a landmark play, which according to the New York Times, *"…is the unmistakable expression of a major writer nearing the height of his powers."* Both heartbreaking and humorous, the story explores the destinies of two families, linked by marriage but set apart by jealousies and distrust, to venture into the human heart and take on the destructiveness it can cause. A LIE OF THE MIND offers a raw yet surprisingly hopeful take on the possibility of picking up the pieces of the
fractured American landscape that Shepard has chronicled throughout his career. On the surface, it is a shattering tale of domestic violence. However,
the play is more fully a story of the mental anguish family members inflict
upon one another, pulling back the curtain on identity and gender, and
delving into the male and female facets that coexist in both sexes.

The production will be directed by The Elm Theatre’s Associate
Artistic Director, Joseph Furnari, and feature two of the company's
ensemble members: Garrett Prejean (Jake) and Becca Chapman (Beth);
along with several other successful local actors: Roger Magendie (Baylor),
Morrey McElroy (Meg), Kristin Samuelson (Lorraine), Andrew Vaught (Mike), Kate Kuen (Sally) and Joel Derby (Frankie).
