On Saturday and Sunday, June 3-4 from 9am to 5pm, the Visual Arts Center of New Jersey in Summit will offer "RAKU-FEST" featuring the ancient art of Raku firing, first developed in Japan centuries ago. Raku firing uses special glazes and firing techniques to produce metallic and crazed finishes.

RAKU-FEST is open to the public, and will be taught by expert ceramicist Peter Syak, assisted by Lisetter Bedoya, both of whom are regular instructors at the Visual Arts Center of New Jersey. All are welcome!

For beginners, pre-made pieces of bisque pottery will be available: small pots for $55, plates for $20 and jewelry pieces for $10. Participants can then glaze and fire them, and take them home the same day.

In addition, the Art Center is offering a "Potters Special," beginning at 8am, for ceramicists with their own pots. They can bring up to 3 pieces of their own small bisqueware, glaze and fire them for $20 each.

Part of the appeal of Raku is that the entire process can be completed so quickly. "It takes just two hours from glazing to amazing," says Libby Clarke, Director of the Studio School at the Visual Arts Center of New Jersey. "It's the same time-commitment as watching a movie!"
