McCarter Theatre will open its popular Cabaret Series with the legendary singer and entertainer Marilyn Maye on Saturday, October 23 at 7:30pm. Maye will pay tribute to renowned lyricist Johnny Mercer with songs like 'Moon River,' 'One for My Baby (and One More for the Road),' and 'That Old Black Magic'.

A supremely elegant jazz singer, a deeply moving torch bearer, and the funniest (and most natural) ad libber in the business, Marilyn Maye's talent is eternal and irresistible. Her career is a litany of honors, awards, and landmark achievements. She has performed in cabarets and theaters, regularly on nearly all major, national live performance television shows; from Monte Carlo for the late Princess Grace to New York's famed Lincoln Center for Manhattan's musical elite.

Ms. Maye has received many awards in recognition of her work, including the 2008 and 2009 New York Nightlife Critics Award, and the 2008 Backstage Bistro Lifetime Achievement Award. In the last three years, her twelve engagements at venues throughout in New York-including the Metropolitan Room-have been met with resounding critical and audience acclaim.

Ms. Maye's RCA recordings consist of seven albums and 34 singles. 'The Lamp is Low', her now classic album of ballads arranged and conducted by Peter Matz, was chosen by the Smithsonian Institute to be included in its 20th Century permanent collection.

Appearances with symphony orchestras have included the Phoenix Symphony (conducted by Doc Severinsen), the Philly Pops (conducted by Peter Nero), the Florida Philharmonic, and many more. Ms. Maye's starring roles in musical theater productions include Stephen Sondheim's FOLLIES, and Jerry Herman's HELLO, DOLLY! and MAME.

Rex Reed of The Observer raved, "Marilyn Maye has everything. She can belt, and she can sing ballads with the kind of warmth that makes your heart smile. She has a theatrical flair that captivates and enthralls, and jazz-spiced chops that can reach notes most singers a third her age can't even hit in their dreams. She's the real deal, the surviving artist of the American popular singer."

While most performers regarded an appearance on The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson to be a major career break, Ms. Maye had a standing invitation, appearing a record 76 times. Mr. Carson nicknamed her "Super-Singer," which subsequently became the name of her tribute recording to the television legend. Perhaps the most simple and eloquent accolade came as she finished one of her show-stopping appearances on Johnny Carson when, turning to his nightly audience of millions, Mr. Carson said, "And that, young singers, is the way it's done."

Regular admission tickets are $46, and student tickets are $15. To charge by phone call (609) 258-2787 or toll-free at 1-888-278-7932; or visit www.mccarter.org. McCarter Theatre is located at 91 University Place, Princeton.
