After only a few minutes into the first scene, you realize that Absurd Person Singular is going to be a thoroughly entertaining theatrical event. Now on stage at Two River Theater (TRT) though February 1st, the show enjoys superb direction by Jessica Stone and features a stellar cast.

Written by Allen Ayckbourn, this 1972 play is considered one of his finest works. Absurd Person Singular is a timeless piece that chronicles the changing fortunes, and misfortunes of three very different married couples in suburban England.

Each of the show's three acts takes place in the kitchen area of one of the couples' homes during successive Christmas Eve get-togethers. And as events unfold, we learn how the characters deal with daily pressures, relationships, business, and their respective social positions.

Renowned actors make this show a real happening with flawless performances. Brooks Ashmanskas as Sydney, Mary Birdsong as Marion, Michael Cumpsty as Ronald, Scott Drummond as Geoffrey, Melissa van der Schyff as Jane and Liz Wisan as Eva shine in their roles.

While humorous, Absurd Person Singular provides insight that reflects the human condition. Scenes that include Sydney's angst over having guests to his home, Jane's obsessive cleaning habits, Ronald's impersonal behavior, Marion's pretentions, Geoffrey's business woes, and even Eva's bouts with depression are relatable. The tenor of each episode is just right thanks to this multi-talented cast and Stone's direction.

The creative team for Absurd Person Singular does a extraordinary job of bringing the play to life on the Red Bank stage with scenic design by Charlie Corcoran, costume design by Gabriel Berry, lighting design by Rui Rita, and sound design by Drew Levy. The dialect coach is Ben Furey, the casting is by Adam Caldwell, and the production stage manager is Libby Unsworth.

Don't miss Absurd Person Singular. TRT has given metropolitan area audiences another gem this season. Ticket prices range from $37 to $65, with discounts available for groups, seniors, and U.S. military personnel, their families, and veterans. A limited number of $20 tickets are available for every performance; $20 tickets may be partial view. Tickets for patrons under 30 are $20 and include the best available seats at every performance.
