This show is rated PG -13. The show is based on the novel and the 1971 film by Herman Roucher. Book by Hunter Foster, Music and Lyrics by David Kirshenbaum.

It's the summer of 1942... America is at war. Men line up by the thousands to join the army, but on a tiny island off the coast of Maine, three fifteen-year-old boys begin a summer they will never forget. Hermie, Oscy and Benjie are accustomed to spending their summer together in New England, but somehow this year seems different. Girls have replaced baseball and comic books, and a beautiful young war bride has won Hermie's heart. Left alone by her husband as he goes off to fight in World War II, Dorothy befriends Hermie, and they form a bond that differs greatly from the one he shares with his two buddies. After meeting three girls on the beach, Hermie and his friends experience adolescent misadventures including a date at the movies (mistakenly fondling a girl's elbow instead of her breast), a trip to the drugstore to buy condoms (where Hermie squirms during several painful attempts to say the word "rubber"), and a beach party (that begins with a jitter-bug and ends with Hermie missing his date's lips and kissing her forehead). It is with Dorothy that Hermie feels most comfortable. After she invites him over for a friendly night out at her house, Hermie discovers a devastating telegram. In that one night, Hermie learns an important lesson about life, love, and the scope of human compassion.

PDP is pleased to announce that award-winning actress Chelsea Hermann will be returning to Portsmouth from NYC to play the lead role as Dorothy. Also featured in this production will be Liam Blanchard as Hermie, Gavin Sorge as Oscy, Jared Splaine as Benjie, Patrick Dorow, Michael Stailey, Maddie Roth, Lauren Marin, and Mary Jardine.

PDP's Community Focus Program Partner for this production will be Community Toolbox. They will be sharing the spotlight to promote and fund raise for this worthy organization. Community Toolbox mission is to bring volunteers and communities together to improve the homes and lives of homeowners in need.

Community Toolbox believes that everyone deserves to live in a safe and healthy home. People shouldn't be forced to choose between food or mortgage payments and the home repairs necessary to keep them safe and warm. Their focus is to provide small but critical repairs, accessibility modifications and energy efficient upgrades to low income and at-risk homeowners. Their repairs focus on three basic dignities: safety, health and accessibility. They believe in "neighbors helping neighbors," communities rallying together to lend a hand and help one and other in times of need.
