Music and Lyrics by Cole Porter Book by Steve Mackes and Michael Whaley Based on a Novel by James Laver "Nymph Errant" is presented by special arrangement with SAMUEL FRENCH, INC.
Although written by the American composer and lyricist Cole Porter as a star vehicle for the famous London stage actress Gertrude Lawrence, the musical never made it to his native shore. Deemed much to bawdy for the prudish puritans that fueled the Broadway theater economy in 1933, it has only made it as close to an American audience as recently as 2012 in an Off-Broadway rewrite.
Nymph Errant is the story of the young and beautiful Evangeline, fresh from boarding school, who mounts a quest to travel the world to lose her innocence. The school's science teacher, Miss Pratt, urges Evangeline and her classmates to experiment in life “as all good scientists do”. Fully embracing her mentor’s prescription Evangeline's pilgrimage takes her from teases on a train, to revelry in a beach resort, peccadilloes in a Paris cafe, vice in a Venetian palazzo and a Turkish harem lacking in hedonism. In frustration Evangeline returns to her home to find everything she was ever looking for could be found in her own garden.
